Then, pray tell, what is the purpose of this sentence?

Are not feelings of lust, feelings of lust? If you’re married, and those feelings sprout up regarding someone you aren’t married to, you quash them. End of story. You know, forsaking all others, and all that.

What’s remarkable about it? It’s called committment.
From those of bi-sexual orientation I have known, who have “played the field” so to speak, do not “switch off”…one date male and one date female. They tend to “date” either the same sex or opposite sex for long periods of time. If a bi-sexual person chooses to have a relationship with a person of the opposite sex and then decide to marry…with sufficient commitment to that marriage…they stay in a heterosexual relationship…they may have feelings for the same sex…but they are in a commited marriage.

I am sure however that there are many bi-sexual “swingers”, just as there are straight “swingers” who “party” with couples and “partner swap”…

Those bi-sexual men and women I personally know do not “switch” genders at the drop of a hat. One of my good friends who I have known for 20 years is bi-sexual. In his “party” days he had no problem with multiple same sex partners…he was not interested in a relationship.

He met a young woman and fell in love. They asked me to conduct the ceremony…they were not Friends…so I officiated as a non-denominational minister…they’ve been married for about 13 years now…very happy.

A same-sex couple in a neighboring Meeting have been together over 20 years. One partner says he is bi-sexual…the other says he is gay. The bi-sexual partner wasn’t looking for a same sex relationship…it “just happened”…and has lasted the duration…he was invloved with a woman when he met his partner…it was “love at first sight”…he was engaged to the woman and broke it off. They were “married after the manner of Friends.”

How do you know that what you believe isn’t someone’s “nice ideas” as well? Are you asking about “gnosis” as in “know inwardly” or “know” as in “fact based knowledge”?
Can’t prove that it isn’t someboy’s nice idea. But I do know some things…in random order
  • It is not as a result of what my culture wants me to believe. Many times it is against the culture.
  • It is not self-originated (what I want to believe). Many times it is what I would prefer not to believe.
  • It is not based on my feelings and what feels good to me. It is based on claims of objective truth. Sometimes I may not like these claims. Nevertheless, the claims remain.
  • It has been passed on to me through the generations. It is not a nice new invention.
  • It is based on a historical person who claimed to be God. I believe His claims.
  • It is recorded in a book that claims to be inspired by God. I believe those claims.
  • It has not changed through the generations based on the shifting mores of society and culture.
  • Martyrs and saints have shed their blood throughout the generations for holding to this faith counter to the culture which they live in.
If I am to be wrong, I will gladly be wrong holding to a faith that shares the above attributes as opposed to a faith that is a nice idea to my way of thinking.

QUOTE]

If I am wrong concerning the acceptance and equality of my gay brothers and sisters…I will gladly err on the side of love, mercy and compassion than trust in what I am told a book means by someone no better qualified than I…nor closer to God to tell me what it means…

Umm…I am not taking the bait! This thread is not about the usual Catholic / Protestant stuff. Sorry.
Then stop trolling by claiming that Protestant beliefs that have always been held by Christians. Do you think you’re going to get a pass on something that as a matter of historical fact simply isn’t true? :hypno:

You’re promoting “What I want to believe Christianity.” which is exactly what Anne Rice is doing.

Yes, while I understand the anguish you must face when your beliefs are not supported in a secular society…or science…or psychology…or sociology…or the humanities…you still have your civil rights protected…you aren’t always able to deny civil rights to the “lepers”…and that must cause great difficulty…sorry…I don’t do sarcasm well.🙂
I didn’t know that science, psychology, sociology, and the humanities led directly to liberal Quakerism.

She certainly speaks my mind.👍
I bet she does speak your mind, not only in what OP says, but also in her novels she writes all of vampires and blood suckers.

I do pray that some sense prevails in both your minds and you see Jesus as He is and not as what you have made Him to be.

I’m sure she came under great persecution for her professed beliefs, simply because she is who she is. I’m always a bit skeptical and fearful whenever I hear about someone famous who embraces the faith. Satan loves to attack them because they are so visible. When they fall, they become a spectacle. Let’s pray that Anne Rice will come to understand that Christians–however imperfect–are the body of Christ. You cannot have Christ apart from his body, the Church.

Are you implying that people that read her books or read books about vampires are less Christian than people that don’t read such material?

Tiffany, I think you are being a bit judgmental - think about it. The observation I have made about Anne Rice’s declaration on Facebook cannot be interpreted as critical. No it is a valid observation - it is an analysis. Why declare it on Facebook? Why? And why should my observation be construed as critical?
Perhaps I do owe you an apology, and I am sorry. The reason why I have said what I have said is that, analytical it may be, but the words are still rather hurtful. You understand that she is calling for attention. There is no mistake in that. However, why she is calling for attention is something you have not considered.

Cinette, this woman is clearly in pain, and all you can do is point out her faults, whether you mean to or not.

I am not saying that you are a cruel person. All I am stating here is this: you need to slow down, stop for a minute, and think about how what you are saying is affecting other people.

I don’t know if you understand what I am trying to do, here. By saying these things, you are also affecting yourself in such a way as the people around you’s reaction to your comments.

By saying things like this, you invite other people to get mad and attack you. I know how this works, because I once did, and sometimes, still do, what you are doing here.

I am not judging you, Cinette. I rather see myself as protecting you by correcting what you are doing so that it does not invite cruel comments from the people around you.

Stop, take a look around you, and think: “How would I feel if someone said this about me, or about someone that I care about or personally admire? Would this make me angry?”

After all, no, Christianity is not meant to be comfortable, and it is, in fact, about the naked truth, but didn’t Christ say, “If you have done it to the least of these, you have done it to me.”?

I’m not trying to hurt you. I’m just saying that you might want to think about the words that are coming out of your mouth when you say them. I don’t want to see anyone going on a smear campaign against you.

I believe you are a good person with good intentions. Just please be careful, okay? I don’t want to see you get hurt.

Peace to you friend.

Amen.

Will Rice’s next book be titled ‘Bill and Ted The Vampires Excellent Adventures Against The Mean Ol’ Catholic Church?’
I’m sorry, and I don’t mean to be rude, but the way you stated your opinion is totally unacceptable. This isn’t to say that you shouldn’t be able to state such an opinion here, but you could have done it in a more appropriate way, and, for that, I think you should apologize to the people here. We are here to state our opinions and make friends, not launch a mud-slinging campaign.

Ann Rice may have made a mistake in her post, but that does NOT give you the right to tear down this woman’s reputation and integrity. How would you feel, if someone did this to you?

Not only that, but the comment that you have posted lacks a sense of maturity. Further more, it is not a very Christian thing to say about a person, be they Christian, or otherwise. Set a good example for the public and do yourself a favor: act like an adult.

That is out of line.

Personally, this is how I see Jesus:

Jesus was a God made human for a brief period of time without losing his grace and divinity. He came down to Earth to pay for our sins so that we might be saved from the fires of hell. His blood washes us clean so that God may see us in a different light, rather than as sinners to be damned for all eternity. Now, Jesus was not just the last sacrifice. He is an example of what we should be more like, and the word for that is COMPASSION. C-o-m-p-a-s-s-i-o-n. Now that I’ve spelled that out for you, I’m going to tell you something else.

Jesus was not just some stern teacher saying, “Do this” or “Do that”. Jesus was a generous human-being that understood that man was doomed to fail on his own without him. I’m sorry, but that includes you, wwolverine. He got up there on that cross so that people like you could have the opinions that you do and act as you choose, and still not go to hell when you die.

No good works could ever get us into heaven, but, for the love of your savior, don’t put yourself on such a high pedestal by stepping on other people’s backs. Anne Rice may not be the best person in the world, but you shouldn’t sneer at another when they are clearly in pain and need help. I know that her books on Jesus aren’t accurate, but, clearly, neither are yours.

I wonder how you would feel if this happened to you, and someone came banging on your proverbial door, carrying a metaphoric baseball bat? It’s so easy to place the blame when it’s not your fault, but it’s hard carry the weight of your sin, when it’s you under the microscope, isn’t it?

Anne Rice may have put herself in the spotlight, but we should feel pity for this poor ignorant woman, not hit her on the nose with a rolled up newspaper like some kind of dog. Clearly, she has made a mistake, and she should be called on it, but that’s not up to you, nor is it up to me. It’s up to God, and maybe you’ve forgotten that, but I haven’t.

And, while we’re on the topic of making God, need I remind you that you are not him. I’m sorry that we all fall short of the glory of wwolverine, but, sooner or later, you’re going to get a crack on that high pedestal of yours, and when everything all falls down, you’re going to be back here with the rest of us. This is obviously inevitable.

But I hope that when you come crashing down and that jewel-encrusted gold crown falls off your head, you realize that God made each of us different and unique. Not everybody is going to share your views. We’re not supposed to. Do you know why? It’s because God delights in variety, and while he doesn’t want any of us to fall away from him, he enjoys the fact that we’re all different. Maybe you’ve lost sight of that.

I’m sorry, wwolverine, but we can’t all be as smart or wonderful as you are, and I’m sorry that we don’t measure up to your double-standard, but that’s how it is: welcome to the human race. We’re all different, and, nobody’s perfect. Not even you. Sorry, but your name is not Jesus Christ, so how do you know what kind of man he was, or how he was supposed to be? You might want to talk to your local deacon or priest on that one, and you’d be surprised at what kind of answers you’d get.

Jesus was a man of compassion, patience, and spoke in a gentle, even tone. Nowhere in the Bible do I find any biting sarcasm or cruel remarks. You know, there was a time when he said that people might say something along the lines of, “But, Jesus! We did good works and performed miracles in your name!” Do you know what he said? “I never knew you.” He also said, and you might want to write this one down, “If you have done it to the least of these, you have done it to me.”

I may not be well-read in the bible, and Anne Rice is no saint. Far from it, if she’s writing novels about blood-sucking monsters. But she’s not evil incarnate, and you are certainly not perfect. She’s lost. She’s trying to find her way in a world that is full of twists and turns, and she’s lost her road map. We all do sometimes. But that is no reason to go on a witch-hunt, or beat down another person on this thread (or anywhere else for that matter) just because they think differently than you do.

“Jesus Saves!” I read that somewhere, and it couldn’t be more true. It doesn’t matter what you’ve done. Jesus loves you, and he’s your savior. He doesn’t care as long as you accept that. But, I would think that he also wants you to know that, while Jesus is Lord, you are not.

Welcome to reality. I hope you enjoy it, because you’re going to be staying here for a very long time.

(Apology in Advance for the Other Unfortunate Souls Reading This Post is Below).

A Note to Those Reading The Above Post:
It might be a mistake that I’m writing this. I’m pretty sure that someone is going to put a boot in my behind for what I’ve written. But we are all sinners, and none of us is better than the other. It really burns me up that this individual doesn’t seem to understand this. Maybe I should speak my mind in a gentler tone, but if this person is going to make rude remarks, then maybe I should speak my mind. God calls on all of us to have a little humility, and maybe I’m just as bad as he is. I can see that. But he’s not God, and it’s not up to him to call the shots on who is mislead and who isn’t. It’s up to Jesus. Now, I hope I haven’t offended anyone here, and I’m sorry, but somebody had to say it, and he had to hear it. That being said, I’m going to get off my soap-box and apologize in advance for the sore behind that I’m about to have as a result on slipping off my own little pedestal and falling flat on the floor:

I’m truly sorry for being so crass. I’m sorry if I’ve hurt anyone. I’m just irritated that this person is so darned high-handed. I just can’t stand it when someone feels the twisted need to kick another individual when that person hits rock bottom, and it’s even worse when they insult the intelligence of those who are standing up for what they believe is right. This being said, I’m going to try to humble myself and shut up, before I get myself into even more trouble than I already am. Peace.
