Hi everyone,

I’m conflicted and need your help.

For the past year, I’ve been sick with ongoing diarrhea, and the doctors haven’t figured it out. Since July 2007, I’ve lost over 60 lbs, have frequent abdominal pain, and feel ‘aweful’ most of the time.

I was overweight to begin with, and still have ‘wiggle room’ for losing more weight. I am still working with the doctors to try to get it diagnosed and treated.

I went to a healing Mass last night where the Annointing of the Sick Sacrament was being given, and my friends really pushed for me to go up.

I did go up, but I’ve been feeling ‘guilty’ because I don’t feel like I’m in “immediate” danger of death or anything like that. My understanding of this Sacrament that it’s supposed to be only used for surgery and very serious illnesses, like cancer and don’t feel my condition is that serious.

I realize that my condition, if I continue losing weight, could become life-threatening (I’m trying to get it healed/cured/etc. before I become underweight), but didn’t know if I ‘jumped the gun’ with the Sacrament.

I’d appreciate any advice.

Thanks,

Barbara

P.S. Just in case you’re wondering, I’ve had a whole gamut of tests, a few repeatedly, and we’ve ruled out parasites, celiac, collitus, Crohns, diverticulitis, gluten/wheat allergy–all the ‘obvious’ stuff.

There was nothing wrong on your part. Most people who receive the Sacrament of the Sick should of course make sure that they are in a State of Grace just like anyone going up to receive Holy Communion. It is recommended that they make a special trip to the Sacrament of Reconciliation just before receiving the Sacrament of the Sick to be sure. Chromic illness that makes one weak is in my opinion a reasonable condition to seek the Sacrament.

Well, I don’t know any official rules but in my opinion you should certainly make use of this sacrament. I don’t think you should feel guilty at all. I think you really needed it and did the right thing. You don’t have to be at death’s door to want/need/deserve healing. I will be praying for you to be healed and to receive an answer to your troubles. Please do not feel guilty. What an ordeal you are going through and I’m sure you did the right thing by going forward.

Personally, I have not been to a healing Mass since I have been Catholic (attended one while still in RCIA) but I would even go forward for my diabetes/chronic back problems/fibromyalgia. I am certainly not in imminent danger but I feel bad and have a hard time and pain, etc. I believe that is reason enough.

Thanks Br. Rich SFO

They did have Confessions before Mass, which I did partake of that as well.

Take Care,

Barbara

I’m sorry if I’m off topic, but I was under the impression that the sacrament of the sick also forgave your sins and brought you back into a state of grace, and also removed temporal punishment for your sins? For example, if a person who was not in a state of grace was in a auto accident, and was not conscious, but did receive the sacrament of healing, they would be brought back into a state of grace, wouldn’t they?

Thank you.

Yes, if they die without regaining consciousness or are unable to confess for some reason.
