Nah, they just want to trade up their “slavery” from a husband to big daddy gubbmint. Notice how these women want more “equal pay” for their Fluffy-bunnies majors? Oh and can’t forget the “free birth control” 😉

Thank God my woman isn’t one of those deluded hypocrites. 👍
I want equal pay because I graduated with honors from college with a male-dominated degree and I’m kicking some serious butt in my law program. No fluff bunny stuff here!😛

Ok, well my first degree is in psych, but I grew up, found myself, and realized that I wanted to do something real so I went back and changed my life.

Is this some kind of private discussion between the two of you?😊

Yes, well, ahem, it was a, ahhh, hot topic.😊😉
Hahaha, that is was, my friend 🙂
Hilarious and a little awkward…completely great!😛

Good for you, girl! Glad to see another woman taking her education seriously 😉

It may be difficult to imagine, yet the original poster said “but I got the impression from the ad that this was a very intentional re-write in order to be more “traditional” in regard to gender roles.” So I accept that evaluation in my post. I have see many advertisements that play upon stereotypes.
So, do you see stereotypes (as a rule) a bad thing when it comes to advertising? Numbers don’t lie and some ads are made to appeal to specific genders rather than cater to both genders in order to be “politically correct.” I don’t find fault with Jared’s for advertising diamonds and other jewelry or Belks for advertising female clothing at women; just as it’s not wrong for Home Depot to advertise ratchet sets or tool belts or an Army Navy stores advertising items to men. That doesn’t mean that all women are incapable of home improvements or camping or that there aren’t some men out there that don’t wear dresses or pretty ear rings. Rather, it means that companies are targeting the “rule” and not the “exceptions.” Nothing wrong or immoral with that.

Out of curiousity, what in your opinion are these ‘fluffy-bunny’ majors? ‘Leporidae (rabbit) studies’
Weird for anyone to expect to be paid for their major, whatever it is. People expect to be paid as much as everyone else doing the exact same job as them.

And maybe survivalism (as in hunting and hiking and being able to support yourself in the forest, which was the subject of the ad in the op) is a male personality trait specifically because of the biological differences between men and women. Men have always been more dependant on being strong and being able to survive and support themselves and those they love. Just because some women now think that it is good for women to support themselves too doesn’t mean that survivalism is not a male trait.

Psychology and physicality are connected. My personality is dependant on my physical character as a man.
I can sort of see what point you are making, but have you ever actually been a woman? 😃

I get what people are saying, and for this one particular ad, okay, it’s targeted marketing, not really sexism. But overall, yes, there are incredibly sexist ads out there and it does get really tiring. If an ad comes on about something you really love to do, and you’re already irritated by sexism in advertising (part of the reason I’m so thankful for the DVR when watching football games), and the ad, even very gently, insinuates that the products sold by the store are not meant for your gender, then wouldn’t you be a bit irritated? When you’ve already been told that you better watch out for BO or hairy legs, have an immaculately clean (and nice-smelling!) house no matter what your kids have done to it that day, and have a gourmet meal ready when hubby walks in the door?

The ads I get irritated by are the household cleaning products ads that feature the “dumb dad” making a mess with the kids, and then in comes mom to the rescue, who may roll her eyes but she’s got the miracle cleaning product so she can clean up after them. Um, hello! Give the stuff to dad and the kids and make THEM clean up their OWN mess! 😛 (Some ads seem to have picked up on this, and mom fetches product out of the closet and hands it over to sheepish-looking dad. Those I can handle a bit better. ;))

I’m surprised more men don’t get upset about the “dumb dad” stereotype. I find it offensive and I even know quite a few men like that (or at least, men who are really good at pretending to be dumb, because it gets them out of things…:eek::eek:)
You really hit the nail on the head here. I would not give a hoot about gender stereotyping in advertising if it was not for the fact that all the things they imply are ‘for the men’ are things that I happen to love doing to the extent that i do feel let down a bit. I suppose that those who have more ‘traditional’ interests would find it easier ti ignore such ads.

I was listening to my local Catholic radio station recently and I heard an ad for an Army-Navy store. They have run ads for it for a while and they used to refer to it as a place for the “whole family”. The ad has recently been changed to very bluntly call out the fact that the Army-Navy store is the perfect place to find gifts for “sons and husbands”. I would like to think it was just poor advertising, but I got the impression from the ad that this was a very intentional re-write in order to be more “traditional” in regard to gender roles.

Now, we know that the church teaches that men and women are different, but it does not say that women are somehow unable to enjoy camping gear and the store’s knife collection. I feel that a quick look at many of the women in the Bible, as well as many of our female Saints would show that the Church takes pride in women that get out there and make things happen. Just think of the Proverbs 31 discussion of femininity. The woman described in Proverbs 31 would certainly be an expert in survival skills at the very least for the sake of her family. She is a woman prepared for what comes her way. She is a woman capable of transitioning seamlessly between running agricultural endeavors, business opportunities, and keeping people fed and clothed. I would like to think that if disaster hit, the Proverbs 31 woman is the type that would already have the necessary rations stored away and ready. I guess I was always raised to believe that EVERYONE needs to know survival skills and that it is a “being human” thing and not a a “man” thing to have camping gear, knives, guns, etc. because if you need to eat then you need to eat - it doesn’t matter who you are. In the event that a family would get stuck in a survival situation all capable members need to be prepared.

I really would like to think that it was an honest mistake, but the bluntness of the ad makes me doubt that. It’s really too bad, because it looks like a great store.
You bring up a lot of points good there.
But don’t think that these commercials don’t know that people are going to call them sexist — they know, they just don’t care. What they care about is making their money.

Carefull observation on TV and radio can prove to one’s self that their are countless examples of sexist or double-standard types of advertising out there. …

…For example, every year when Valentine’s Day season comes around, what do you see on TV commercials? You see lots of commercials for diamonds, chocolates, and roses/flowers. And ALL of those commercials are tagetted towards men! — It’s all about the man SPENDING, and the woman RECEIVING. And the only reason that men don’t complain about these sexist commercials is because they don’t have a choice — men know that if they don’t spend some money on their woman for Valentine’s Day, he’s not getting laid at the end of the night. And these companies KNOW this fact, so they use it to their advantage to make a lot of money off of Valentine’s Day. How’s that for romance?

And the church is big business like any other big business — and business is good. Thousands of dollars pour into any church in any town every week, and no one ever sees where it goes. And they don’t have a problem with you calling them sexist as long as you be sure to drop some cash into the offereing basket.

So, back to the original point – yes it’s a sexist commercial, but as long as it works for them, they will keep running it.

Every time you see a commercial for a vacuum cleaner, isn’t it always the woman doing the vacuuming? Totally sexist, but who’s going to complain enough to have them taken off the air? They have been running these commericals for decades.

So, I just don’t let these things bother me – as they say, “Don’t sweat the small stuff” — I’ve got things serious things to be concerned with, not some slightly distasteful commercial. 😉

Weird for anyone to expect to be paid for their major, whatever it is. People expect to be paid as much as everyone else doing the exact same job as them.
Oh boy…where do I even begin…

I’ll sum it up succinctly any Liberal Arts major lacking in anything Mathematical, Scientific, Technological, or Engineering wise is a worthless degree. So yeah all Art History, Communications, Theatre, Journalism…ect ect…All worthless

I’d also go all in and say Law degrees are worthless. Yes, and that’s because the nation is littered with them from people who majored in fluff woke up and realized they were gonna be working at Target when they graduated and decided to trade up, but they didn’t want to repeat 4 years of school, so they just decided to get a law degree (No offense BlueEyedLady).

Except that’s the problem women are not getting “paid less” than men. It is a complete myth. If you judge “pay” based on Income levels, of course men will make more. More men hold STEM degrees over women’s Liberal Arts…it’s a Supply & Demand. High Demand and Low Supply for STEM. Women who go into Medical, Technology, Mathematics, Engineering, Science…make a KILLING over the beta-male who majored in Pop Culture…you see where I’m getting at?

No, I have never been a woman, and you have never been man. Neither of us can claim a subjective knowledge of what it is to be the opposite sex. As humans we are either men or women, we shouldn’t pretend neutrality.

My point is simply that men and women are different, and that difference is real. Not only is it pointless to deny the differences, it is destructive to both men and women because they are expected to deny their own identity at least to a certain extent. It isn’t sexist to recognize these differences. In the case the ad above it is a marketing tool. By marketing to those people who will buy their product they will sell more than they would if they did a general ad.

Those ads aren’t saying you can’t do those activities. Knock yourself out and go into an army navy store. But the fact is that their demographic is overwhelmingly men.

Yup, I agree. Whenever I hear someone tell me that have a Art History major or a Music major…ugh I feel bad for them and their quest for employment after college! But I have to say that not everything that’s not a major in math, science, etc is worthless, like degrees in Education. We need teachers, even English teachers ;).

Not true at all. Business degrees are extremely useful if you get anything other than marketing or management. Accounting, finance, an MBA are all very useful. Foreign language degrees also offer a lot of good prospects. If social sciences are really your thing Political Science also opens a lot of doors. (And if you go on to grad school it is an extremely profitable Master’s degree)

Big caveat to that. If you have a firm that is willing to pay at least part of your law school tuition and allows you to work for them while you get your degree it is far from useless. Especially since most will hire you after that, and even if they didn’t your resume far outshines all of your peers in real world experience. You will be a part of the 40% with a job within 5 years of graduation. (Also my law school has very impressive employment stats for grads anyway, but I didn’t go in without a strong connection to a large firm.) I don’t know where you got the fluff idea, all of my law school friends graduated with either business or chemistry degrees.

Women who go into Medical, Technology, Mathematics, Engineering, Science…make a KILLING over the beta-male who majored in Pop Culture…you see where I’m getting at?Complete myth. When looking at the pay gap you have to look at men and women in the same position in the same field. No one is suggesting that a female social worker make as much as a male engineer. We just want the female engineer to make as much as the man. And when comparing the wages of men and women at the same position in the same field, even sometimes in the same company, women still make less.
As far as fluffy degrees go, they do help in one way. They mean that you have a degree. That’s what gets your foot in the door. Many employers won’t even look at you without that, and some don’t even care what your degree is so long as you have one. Also, because people who have stupid degrees tend to be the ones that didn’t take their futures or educations seriously having a Master’s or higher in your field should you go that route is a must. That is what sets you apart. No, with a Master’s in journalism you won’t be working at CNN right out of college, but you will get a decent job for a popular newspaper in a medium sized city and work up from there. Without a Master’s you’re the person who has your degree because you had to major in something. With a Master’s you show that you actually have knowledge and passion when it comes to the field.

EDIT: And no matter what your field is it is becoming more and more important to get an advanced degree. With so many people graduating college that doesn’t set you apart anymore. I have a friend who graduated top of her class with a Chemistry degree only to discover that the only thing she could get paid to do is clean and store lab equipment.

This worries me, because eventually we’ll all just have to have PhDs to get a job. 😉

Overgrown boys raised by single moms have no idea how to be a protector or a provider drink Diet Dr. Pepper and use scented soaps?

A man’s ability to protect and provide has nothing to do with his beverage or soap choices and everything to do with who he is as a person at the most basic level.

And plenty of strong, masculine, manly men have been raised by single moms.
It might be the case that there are strong men who are raised by a single mother, but that is far from the ideal or the norm. A large part of learning is through imitation. Most of our traits aren’t consciously chosen, but are learned through imitation. We learn what it is to be strong through imitating strong people. And strength is different for men and women, due simply to the difference in physical and personality traits. So having a strong father is important.
