Someone once said in a debate: “We are all atheists. We both do not believe in Zeus etc. I just believe one less God than you!”.

How do we respond to that?

Thanks!!

Sounds like someone’s just trying an amusing little quip. I’d be surprised if he/she really thought that was a good way to define an atheist, or even to argue for or against the existence of any God. Probably best to just move on to something of more substance.

Use it against him/her. 😛

"We’re all theist. I just believe in 1 more God than you. 🙂 "

What he said made no sense, and what I said made no sense. Haha!

The person stating this is trying to be cute and clever. Ask this person back if he believes in wind. If this person says yes, then ask them how can you believe in wind because you can’t see wind, you can’t touch wind but wind touches you. You can’t hold wind but wind surrounds you. How does he know if wind is real? Hopefully this will shut this person up.

Atheism is a belief system.

Let him/her know that you are also a non-believer regarding the existence of unicorns but that does not stop you from thinking real horses do exist.

According to him/her a horse-denier would be quite right in their position because they merely believe in one less horse than someone who thinks unicorns do not really exist.

Also tell him that his logic is flawed and that he should become as critical regarding his faulty atheistic position as he is presently towards theism.

Or, assert yourself and tell them to stop yanking your chain, that you refuse to engage in pointless debates (can you tell I have been down this road with some people before? 😉 ),

LOL! Atheists believe there is no God. If you believe in some other god, although you are just as wrong, you are not an atheist. 🙂 So no, we are not all atheists. 😉 As long as you believe in God or a god, you are not atheist. Atheists believe there is no higher being of any kind.

I wouldn’t respond to that. Some people just like to hear themselves talk. 😜

Tell them to read a philosophical dictionary. Atheism is not “Disbelieving in at least one god.” It is more along the lines of “Belief there is no God.”

I am puzzled as to why atheists, who claim they don’t believe in God, do their best to try to get us who Do believe in God, to not believe in the God they claim does not even exist. Why in the world do they even care. They go thru a lot of time, money and even hatred to try to convince us their way. Prayers for all, God Bless, Memaw

The debater is stating a belief. He believes in something, i.e.: a universe without God; so you can ask him what leads him to believe such an odd thing. He is expressing some idea about the world that can be understood, discussed, and hopefully can lead toTruth.

The ppl who are frustrating to talk to, say, “I don’t believe in God.”
Unless this approach changes, there is no point of contact, no mutual sharing of ideas and you are left defending a position to which anyone can simply say, “Don’t believe it!”
It would be like, where I personally, don’t believe in reincarnation; so it is up to the other person to try to convince me it is possible, probable and true. I would begin to communicate with the other person only once i start talking about my beliefs.

just saying, 'cause as flippant and annoying as the debater was, there seems to be a hope of mutual understanding.

What annoys me about atheists is they spend probably 98% of their time bashing Christianity. They very rarely, and only if they’re sure they won’t get “caught” say anything bad about Islam, and I’ve never heard one disparage Judaism, even though they profess belief in the exact same God we do, and never say a word about pagans! If there isn’t even one God, isn’t it more ridiculous to believe in several?

In Christ,
Ellen
