Am I the the only one who caught this?

At the end of the the breakfast, one of the moderators was thanking all of the speakers, and when he came to President George W. Bush he referred to him as perhaps the 2nd Catholic president. Afterwards, he corrected himself, then said, “maybe the 1st Catholic president”.

This was a wonderful dig at all of those in that other political party who always fall back on the memory of our late assasinated president when searching for Catholic political icons. This is a symptom of the terrible times we are in. We do not have enough courageous Catholic politicians to stand up for what is morally right. We seem to have more than enough nominal Catholics in politics who do a lot of bragging but will not stand up for the right to life, the sanctity of marriage, etc.

We should thank God for George W. Bush, who seems to be standing in for Catholic politicians in our country.
 
I don’t know, I know some Catholic politicians who are pretty outspoken on pro life, pro family issues. Rep. Steve Chabot is a good example. But yes, unfortunately some of the more famous ones are pretty nominal Catholics.

Yes, I did catch that comment, and then had to explain what it meant to my daughter.
 
I think this was also a play on words regarding that now famous statement regarding then president Bill Clinton being the “first black American president”. 🙂

Yeah, this was definitely a play on words referring back to Bill Clinton. I think it is sort of funny!
 
I still believe in my heart one day George Bush join the Catholic Church. What a great blessing and testimony that would be!

Did you catch the name of the priest/bishop who gave that amazing speech on the importance of language in our culture? It was toward the end of the meeting.

No, I didn’t happen to catch a speech about the importance of language in our culture. I’d dearly LOVE to be able to read the entire transcript of the Annual Catholic Prayer Breakfast - held on April 7, 2006.

Especially what President (G.W.) Bush said in his speech. I caught only the last part of it.

But I did see the part where someone was calling him “maybe the first Catholic President”. Um… he wouldn’t be the first Catholic President only because John F. Kennedy was (is) himself a Catholic. I remember there being all this fuss about whether America would have to bow down to the pope, and all that.

Has anyone else noticed that President Bush will sometimes refer to the Pope as the ‘man who sits on the chair of St. Peter’? Isn’t this unusual for a non-Catholic to say? Doesn’t it denote at least some recognition of Apostolic succession? I’ve never heard any Protestant, other than the President, describe the Pope in this way before.
