no annulments period! Catholic… it means something.
Yes, it does. It means that we accept all that the Church teaches and she teaches that not everyone who says “I do” does it validly. In the instances where that occurs there is no marriage and the Church,in her wisdom recognizes that and if the people involved requests it she makes it known to all.

Phemie,
Excellent Post. 👍 👍
Remember that Christ Gave the Church the authority to Bind and Loose “Whatever”.

Although my annulment is still in process, I have already entered into a new relationship with a Catholic man (we are not married or engaged; just seriously committed). I understand that this relationship is a sin because I am still married in the eyes of God. I do not attend communion when I attend mass. However, I am wondering if it would be a sin to attend confession. I have not gone to confession in many, many years and have contemplated going recently. Is it true that – because I am in a new relationship without having my former marriage resolved – it is a sin to go to confession?
Hello.

As I understand things, you’re not to enter into a new relationship until after your previous marriage is annulled whether it’s (it = new relationship) overtly sexual or not. The sin of lust occurs first in the heart - physical sexual activity is just a symptom of that lust - just because there’s no sexual activity doesn’t mean there’s no lust.

It’s a sin for you to go to confession if you don’t have contrition - if you don’t intend to stop or amend your behavior, if you intend to continue with this relationship while you are already married in the eyes of the church. As I understand things, your confession would be invalid. The God I believe in can’t be fooled. Otherwise, I hope and pray you do go to confession and you’ll be welcomed with open arms.

Is your own salvation a priority for you?

My two cents.

I think that there is good advise here. You are currently in a “ticklish” situation. The line between a friend and a “love interest” could be a fine one indeed.

As to going to confession, you could still go to seek the advise of the priest, anonomously if you so choose. You may even want to make an appointment to speak more fully with a priest or deacon on the matter.

Best wishes on your journey.

Peace
James
