Hi,
I’m interested in starting to attend Mass and possibly RCIA this fall and I am divorced. My ex-husband and I had an extremely bad relationship, he was incredibly emotionally abusive, and started to become physically abusive at the end. I did things in the relationship I’m not proud of, including encouraging an open relationship for both of us with another woman in my desperation to take his attention off of me because he was so viciously cruel to me. He was baptized Catholic as a child and then fell away. Our divorce took 5 months and he remarried 5 months after that. He was married twice before we had gotten married and we have no children together (he had a vasectomy after having 2 kids with his first wife). He spent our entire marriage lying to me about who he really was (he told me he was an Anglican priest who went to seminary, told outrageous stories about how he was abused, etc).
I’m afraid if I decide to join the church I will have to contact him in order to get an annulment. I am still afraid of him because of the abuse and I know he won’t tell the truth about anything.
Does anyone know what might happen in my case if I decide to apply for an annulment so I can join the Church?
