Bigger is better.
Pillow top feels great, but some aren’t pillow top on both sides, so you can’t flip it.
Thicker is not always better. We had to buy new sheets with extra deep pockets to fit ours. And the extra-thick mattress and box spring add up to being too tall to sit on and put my feet on the floor, so it’s hard to put on my socks sitting on the bed! Plus, most nightstands end up below the level of the bed.
You get what you pay for, generally. But watch for sales, as some retailers have huge markups.
Just putting this out there for people when the issue comes up for them:
It is possible to buy a low profile box spring which will keep the height of your new (thicker) mattress and boxspring to roughly the same height as the old mattress and box spring. My daughter has a 100 year old bed and I did not like how high the bed would become. The salesman told me about the lower boxspring, said that older people like them because they keep the bed at a height they are able to still have their feet on the floor. So, keep this little fact in mind when shopping. But I do believe you have to ask for it. Ours had to be ordered. 🙂

op here again. We found it! :bounce::bounce: It’s nice!!! And it was within our pre-determined budget. The new set should arrive later this week.

Warning! Don’t ever look at new mattresses unless you want to buy. Once we started this process of testing other mattresses, our old mattress seemed seriously inadequate. I had thought that this would be a nice aniversary gift to each other, (our aniversary is in spring) but it turned into a Valentine’s Day gift. ❤️

We did that. We measured our current box spring/mattress, then did the math to keep the bed height nearly the same.

I have a Sleep Number bed, and it’s the best money I ever spent. They are cheaper than memory foam and do not trap any heat. They also hold up better to wear and tear, and are easy to assemble at home. Many different options can take care of whatever suits your needs.

The store has their display models hooked up to the computer to show you your own pressure points on your body’s profile. The controls are then adjusted to fit your shape. Once they balance your load, the current setting is your individual “sleep number”.

It takes longer to figure it out on your own, but once you find that sweet spot, you will never wake up in the middle of the night again!!!

I hate, hate, HATE my sleep number bed.

The reason is that they deliver and set it up, but then when we had a problem with one side deflating, they DO NOT have service come to your home. They will only talk to you on the phone and send you pieces to replace. I tried it and it still deflated…grrrrrrrr. If you are handy with taking things apart, this might be okay for you but my husband is not at all handy and I don’t feel like fixing a bed that I paid so much $$$ for!!

HATE the bed.

And I’m happy to say that today I got rid of it. As in an hour ago. The guys from Ethan Allen came and took it away and brought me a new bed and mattress. Ahhhh.

OP, what kind of bed did you end up getting?

Well it sounds like a lot depends on you. Do you have back problems? Do you like being warm or cold?

My wife and i had experience with a sleep number bed in a hotel a couple of years ago. We both hated it. It was annoying and loud for us.

And the pillow-top bed is far too warm for us. But i like to be cool when i sleep. I’m sure others would welcome the warmth.

I, too, loved my old waterbed. I haven’t had it in almost 20 years, but i was able to keep it as cool as i liked. (But i’m a little weird. When i was a young boy, i used to put my sheets and pillow cases between the windows so they would be freezing cold when i went to bed).

So for my wife and i, we’re quite happy with a traditional box spring and mattress.

We decided on a latex foam mattress. It’s wonderful!!! :heaven:

Earlier we ruled out foam because we knew memory foam can retain heat, but we learned while bed shopping that latex foam doesn’t do that. We tried a sleep number and our new latex mattress sort of feels like the sleep number that felt most comfortable to us, but without the whole inflate/deflate thing.

My husband has back trouble and usually wakes up with back pain, but his back felt fine this morning. I have been having trouble sleeping lately, waking up in the night and tossing and turning trying to get comfortable, (kind of like what I do when I’m very pregnant, except I’m not). Last night, I slept through the night for the first time in I don’t know how long. We were so comfortable that we didn’t want to get out of our new bed. 🙂
