Another so called Catholic University, Xavier, has degraded itself by inviting another notorious pro abortion Democrat to address the graduation class. Xavier has invited well known abortion activist, Donna Brasil, to address the 2009 graduating class. What is happening in Catholic higher education? This choice is antithetical to what the school supposedly should have been teaching in its’ religion, ethics and morality classes. Alumni should make their anti Brasil opinions known by withholding funding and support. The archdiocese should step in and demand that these horrendous decisions for anti Catholic speakers be stopped once and for all or relinquish their Catholic designation.

I am just so thoroughly disgusted with all of these “Catholic” schools allowing pro-abortion politicians coming to speak there at their university. If they’re going to use the name “Catholic” then they better act the part too!

Sounds like the “Catholic” universities are becoming more “politically” correct instead of morally correct. These things wouldn’t happen if the leaders of the schools were true, practicing Catholics and actually followed the Church’s teachings.

Down through history, there have always been people and institutions who called themselves Catholic whose actions were anything but. I am not going to dredge up sordid examples, because those who visit this site have heard enough of the negative and don’t need reminding. People, including the clergy and the heirarchy, are fallible; institutions are fallible. Inviting President Obama or Ms. Brasil to deliver a significant address at a Catholic institution seems like a seriously misguided effort to curry political favor or create a public image of urbane tolerance, or both. I don’t believe that Catholics with well formed consciences will be harmed by these speakers. On the contrary these invitations have been a wake-up call for many good Catholics and shaken them out of their lethargy. The problem is that giving these speakers a favorable reception will be viewed as outright approval of their policies by far too many young people. I hope the invitations will be withdrawn with as much tact as possible, but I doubt if that will happen. Pray for those who have been led down this awful primrose path.

Observation from an outsider.

On its web site, Xavier announces itself to be a Jesuit, Catholic University.

Perhaps Xavier, along with Notre Dame and Georgetown and others are merely Jesuit Universities?

"“Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves.” (Mt 7:15)

These attacks from within are troubling, but the Lord will use it to strengthen us!

It’s starting to look like these universities are intentionally flaunting Catholic doctrine and teaching in regards to abortion.

This is exactly the problem as I see it in most cases.

I think maybe Notre Dame is different. I don’t think they are intentionally flaunting Catholic doctrine though that will be the message a lot of young Catholics will get from this incident.

As bad as these things are I think that the root problem is the overwhelming majority of Catholics don’t live anywhere close to the type of life they are supposed to live. I include myself in this. How much of the Church teaching do you ignore in your day to day life?

The archbishop of New Orleans is boycotting the graduation because of Brazile’s speech and honorary degree.
Archbishop Alfred Hughes has told Xavier University he will not attend its graduation ceremonies next month because he objects to the university’s decision to award an honorary degree to Donna Brazile, the veteran Democratic political strategist who supports abortion rights.
Hughes told Xavier President Norman Francis of his decision by letter in which expressed his disappointment with the university, even as he acknowledged its legacy of education among African Americans.
Hughes also praised Francis personally “for your remarkable record of public service.”
In response, a statement from the university said, “From the founding of Xavier 84 years ago, our institution has promoted respect for the dignity, well-being and the protection of life for all persons.”

Notre Dame is not a Jesuit University, but it is aiming to be a politically correct one and not a Catholic one.

Let us pray that the faithful Catholics on their campus will rise up in defense of life and send a strong message to the administration that they do not want this to happen on their campus. More reasons to pray.

I wonder if the University has damaged it’s fund raising capabilites yet? That is most likely the only factor that matters to them.

According to this article, ND has had $8.2 million withheld thus far:
But are the two cases really comparable? Xavier University is a historically black college. Donna Brazile is widely admired in the black community (as well as by others in the US.) and she grew up in the New Orleans area.

I’m not so sure that her selection as the commencement speaker won’t increase donations.

Yes this does not surprise me…as a 30 year faculty member of a ‘catholic’ small C…high school it is quite bad. So many in the church are just socialists who believe in pretty much what the salvation army does…open a soup kitchen and you are just sooooo great a person that thousands will thank you by changing their lives and will follow Jesus instead of:…you full in the rest!!! When the dreadful abortion ruling came down or was that up.from the supremes,I was the only teach, lay or religious ,who assembed an anti-abortion program for the students…and I was insulted by the administration when I finished…a priest and nun. Our church has been infiltrated by demons and we must not forget that at the last supper a demon called Judas was also there…he it was who actually kissed in greeting Jesus that nite in the garden so that the Roman soldiers would know who He was! These colleges make no pretense at all about their hatred of Jesus and Mary…their smirks can be seen from here to eternity…in so many ways its good for the sheeps clothing to fall off of the wolf…lift up the sword of St.Mike and lets go…we have some pruning to do…

This is sickening. And I don’t care whether Xavier is a predominantly black university or not; they are supposed to be a Catholic university - that would make honoring Ms. Brazile contrary to the Church’s teaching, no matter what color she is or political party with which she is affiliated.
