Another Synod, but with new rules and under a cloud of crisis

This synod is going to be more about the Church’s teachings on homosexuality, contraception, etc. than about youth. It’s being set up as a vehicle to undermine these “controversial teachings” (as the synod preparatory document puts it) in the name of “accompaniment”.

Ah, the Secretary General has shared the details of his plans with you! how nice of him.

Nothing good will come of this Synod. It was doomed long before it started. It will end exactly the same way as the last one: with a final document that on the surface is orthodox, but then will be parlayed into another ambiguous document by the Pope that can be interpreted in one of a thousand different ways and will never receive clarity.

Anyone know what this thing the Pope was carrying is supposed to be? I know some “yutes” gave it to him a while back, but what is it supposed to signify? It looks…odd.

I agree. Pope Francis opened the synod with the same euphemisms as the last one regarding offering opinions, God of surprises, be prepared to change your mind, no need for sophisticated doctrine, etc. What a useless endeavor.

I am also very curious…can anyone explain what this is supposed to represent?

Abstract art… Probably Jesus with outstretched arms, with a nail through them. Note his face is sort of in the first picture although it was more clear in other pictures.

Oh wow…now that you say that I can see a vague figure in the wood…totally missed that before.

This is my biggest problem with modern art. It often has a decent meaning it is trying to convey, but because it is so subjective and detached from tradition it is unrecognizeable to almost everyone–instead of the powerful image of divine love that is Christ crucified or even just the cross of Christ that this may be trying to convey, all most will see is an ugly, even sinister looking forked stick with a random nail in it. As such, as art, this is a complete failure and waste.

This looks more like a witch stang than a papal ferula for a Catholic pope. 😟

Who gave this to Pope Francis? Surely he didn’t design or choose it.

I immediately understood it’s nail in wood. Like the Nails in the Cross. If I didn’t get it, I wouldn’t call the Pope’s regalia “waste and failure”.

ITS NOT ABOUT THE NAIL!
  • just wanted to make a vaguely connected pop culture reference. Carry on

" During the opening Mass of the XV Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops, dedicated to the Youth, faith and vocational discernment, the staff that Pope Francis wore caught our attention.

This is due to its design, and is that it is a wooden staff that represents Jesus crucified with arms joined by a nail and sculpted in the shape of a bamboo.

The Holy Father received this staff as a gift from the 70 thousand young Italians with whom he met [at the Circus Massimo in Rome on August 11.
The young people, from some 200 dioceses in the country, participated in the great pilgrimage organized by the Italian Episcopal Conference with the motto “On a thousand roads, towards Rome”.

All walked on the various routes that took them from their cities of origin to the Plaza de San Pedro in the Vatican.

The delivery of the staff was made a few moments after the event began. A young woman of 30 years, identified as Elena, told the Pontiff that during the pilgrimage “we have experienced that each path needs your cane and on this special occasion we give you a staff sculpted from a log”.

"In the torn heart of Jesus on the cross a small seed is guarded, that seed that dies to bear fruit ,and our hope. And it reveals the secret to make life flourish, love, "said the young woman explaining the meaning of the staff.

She also told Pope Francis that "it would be beautiful for this staff to accompany you during the Youth Synod. All of us gathered here could feel that we are at your side and connect our heart and our memory to this extraordinary meeting. "

“Holy Father, we have come here to tell you that we love you very much and we want to walk forward together,” she added.

It was today October 3, that the Pontiff fulfilled the desire of these young people

I don’t think it’s as sinister as people are implying but I was an 80s kid, so I just see ewok.

Based on what you share, Pope Francis was obligated that moment to grasp this ‘gift’ given by thousands of youth. 🥺
moving along…I pray something good comes of this synod. That ‘gift’ certainly suggests a great need.

Hahahaha that was hilarious.
It is ok and clear you do not like it 😁

Not my cup of tea either ,but I must admit I have worn you know…😁 those necklaces made of painted noodles and " special" kind of ornaments my kids have bought ,made or given me with much love.
So…who knows…
We cannot deny it is different and the idea of the seed quite creative.
