I just don’t get it. There are so many sites out there in the Worldwide Web as well as other forums and there is just so much hate for the Catholic Church. Why is that? I see other disputes among different denominations in those forums and even though they most definitely disagree, they dont break down and start throwing insults left and right like when they get into a discussion with us. Why do they hate us so much? Is this part of the prophecy that Jesus was talking about when He said that the world will hate you because they hated Me (Jesus) first? When I heard that verse, I never thought our Protestant brothers and sisters would be part of that world. God bless.

I live in a very Catholic community. It wasn’t until I bought a computer that I discovered how much anti-Catholicism is out there. Wow what an eye opener , so many lies and mis truths it is just mind boggling. When I read my first Jack Chick tract I just couldn’t believe it! I really had no idea that others thought things like that about the Catholic faith.

I definitely know what you mean. I’m even thinking about stopping to go to those other forums because the anger just builds up inside me but I also want to help set the record straight and hopefully will lead at least one person back home. Jack Chick is just evil. After reading his stuff, it seems he isn’t even Christian and just writes things for shock value.

When I’m having religious discussions in the “real world”, I never hear this vile hatred that permeates throughout the internet in regards to the Catholic Church. I don’t know if people are holding it in and just don’t want to say it or the people online who say this stuff are the vast minority and most aren’t like this. I pray it’s the latter. Thanks for responding and God bless.

Same here. I have had friends and family invite me to their churches and what not but have never been treated to any anti-Catholic comments or have been challenged into debate or to defend my faith.

It wasn’t really till I started researching for a story I’ve been writing that I discovered just how much anti-Catholicism there is. I’m fairly knowledgeable and educated regarding Catholicism and my faith, but I still didn’t know a lot about the priesthood, or the day-to-day lives about priests. So, I did a Google search which lead to some of the most hateful, anti-Catholic sites out there. Fortunately, I also found a super resources and learned a lot in the meantime.

Sadly, with the Internet, there is a lot of “teaching” out there that masquerades as good, faithful Catholic teaching and really isn’t and then there is the blatant hate that turns my stomach.

That is exactly why.

The vast majority are not filled with hatred toward Catholicism.

You have extremes everywhere.

Though, yes, I admit Protestants are much more apt to being anti-Catholic in mean ways than Catholics are to be anti-Protestant. It has been a rare Protestant friend who still considers me a Christian, sadly… And ashamed I would’ve been one of them. Wonderful to be coming home, really.

I was really naive about all the hatred towards our faith for a long time, too. It wasn’t until I came back home this past fall that I started really seeing it. The only other reason I can think of, other that what the OP said, is that the Truth hurts and the people who are making these horrible accusations against Catholicism are ignorant. 🤷

Someone once said, “Attack them where it hurts the most.” The Catholic Church is the complete deposit of Faith. The devil fears what can hurt him most and thats the complete truth. So he attacks it relentlessly. He tries to scandalize it, and damage it, but in the end the Church is triumphant. The Catholic Church is the last to stand by the truth when it comes to many issues facing our society today. This must drive the devil crazy. So it makes sense that he would attack it more fiercely. But be not afraid, Christ has won the victory for us. Just reach out and claim it.

Yes, I believe so…and if it is part of Jesus’ prophecy, then all we can do is take comfort in His words and know that we are doing, acting, living as He taught us to. 🙂

I read this recently (you may have seen it) and it makes perfect sense to me:

“Not 100 in the United States hate the Roman Catholic Church, but millions hate what they mistakenly think the Roman Catholic Church is.”
~ Bishop Fulton J. Sheen

So true, and he will never stop attacking the Church or its members. Like you said though, Christ has already claimed victory for us. 🙂

Every school I have ever attended has been out of control with anti-Catholic rhetoric. The internet is out of control with it. As is the American government as far as I am concerned.

It’s partly because the church is so big and successful. The pope can claim to speak for over a billion people. That makes the church a voice that can’t be ignored.

Abp. Fulton Sheen once said, “Very few people actually hate the Catholic faith. Many people, however, hate what they THINK is the Catholic faith. And if what they hated really were the Catholic faith, Catholics would hate it, too.”

It is easy to make such hateful comments behind the shield of the computer screen. People don’t see the people they are talking to, and just tell things as they see them without regard for the opinions of others. Ironically, the most anti-Catholic things I have read have been on Catholic forums- or at least forums that claimed to be Catholic. I’ve seen a few on here that were pretty bad, but *most *of them have been deleted, but the sedevacantist boards…some of the things they say about priests, bishops, or any of the five popes or so are right up there with the Chick tracts.

Ironically, for many people, anti-Catholicism is part of their “tradition,” a tradition which is handed down from their prayer-partners or bible study group leaders, or evangelism training instructors. It isn’t something people would come to naturally without having it passed on to them.

It sometimes startles me to see how quickly a secularized person can go from having a ‘born again’ experience to involvment with a church group to spouting anti-Catholic remarks which they have learned from their particular tradition.

A few observations from someone who is enjoying a Lenten season away from a very anti-Catholic forum:

  1. *]Some of the most vile comments come from ex-Catholics who never understood the faith to begin with.
*]It is human tendency to dislike what you do not know. It is also easier to believe what you hear from others than to verify information first.
*]Some people protest just for protesting sake and throw common sense to the wind; if they were to agree on a few major points, they are afraid they will slide on the slippery slope into the Catholic Church.
As I said, I am enjoying some time away from the anti-Catholic forum, but when Lent is over I will return there. If the few Catholics who go there ceased to inform them of the truth, we would have failed as commissioned children of God.

    Peace be with you.

I was born and raised a Seventh Day Adventist (SDA) before I converted in 1981. The SDA denomination wouldn’t even be able to exist if it weren’t for the Catholic Church because their theology is based on anti-Catholic teachings: whore of Babylon, anti-Christ, mark of the beast, you know the drill. Without the Church, the SDAs would have no one to preach against. They still believe that in the last days we are going to bring instruments of torture out of our Church basements to persecute them with.

What is really sad though, is that I have friends who are agnostic and athiestic and they are also anti-Catholic.

There is a post on a religion message board on amazon.com regarding “problems with Catholicism” with 4977 posts. It’s nuts! Of course, they seem willing to attack others as well as Catholics. Can’t believe these people have nothing better to do with their time. Why don’t they spend their time with Bible and studying their own religion instead of putting ours down?

If you ever want to see the most vile attacks, read the comments after any AOL article on anything remotely related to Catholicism.
