My soapbox opinion…Hi all!
To start with a small disclaimer, I’m going to be expressing an opinion, so if you don’t want to read on I’ll understand.![]()
The term “anti-Catholic” is used fairly frequently, but it seems to me that Protestants get off fairly easily: this is because if a Protestant make an anti-Catholic statement, (reasonable) Catholics generally understand that it is not representatives of Protestants generally. On the other hand, I frequently hear a Catholic make an anti-Protestant statement followed by a reaction from Protestants often along the lines of “Yeah, that’s what I would expect a Catholic to say.” (This is easy to see in the very same Protestants who are most active on this forum.)
Soapbox away.
Peter you use the terms “anti Catholic” and “anti Protestant” as though both terms can be defined on equal footing and you know this not to be true. Everybody agrees there is no single Protestant theology therefor there cannot be a single anti-Protestant stance. There can, however, be a single anti-Catholic stance as it is verifiably and definitively defined unlike Protestantism.
If someone wants to refute the Catholic theology on any given subject the premises are easily defines and verified and either believed or not. If someone wants to refute any Protestant theology they must first start with a specific denomination’s interpretation of this theology and weed out all other Protestant denominations that do not adhere to said theology, which is not often done by us Catholics, then refute, believe, or not.
Interesting though, when a non-Catholic refute another non-Catholic often times one side is arguing the Catholic standpoint on a specific issue. So, in effect, later intended “anti-Catholic” remarks from the Protestant ultimately become “anti-Protestant”, in some sense, but with the caveat that we are still “all one” for the good of Christianity.
If we are in fact “all one” then one could conclude we are refuting ourselves.
Peace!!!
