Vandals have spray-painted anti-Christian graffiti on the main door of a Franciscan convent in Jerusalem, Church officials have said.

Photographs published online showed blue graffiti denigrating Jesus at the Convent of Saint Francis on Mount Zion.

Also spray-painted on the door were the words “price tag”.

Jewish settlers and extremists have been carrying out so-called “price-tag” attacks in retaliation for Israeli government curbs on settlement growth.

I wonder why there are no news stories about graffiti in Italy? I wonder if it’s because everywhere gets spray-painted in Italy, religious or secular?

The Israeli government also denounced the “criminal act” and promised that those responsible would be “severely punished”.
Good for Israel going after these deviants, they should be punished. Shame on the vandals for turning on innocent bystanders to vent their frustration with their own lives and promote their radicalism.

You ask a fair question. Churches are vandalized in the US with some frequency, and the vandalism is occasionally against historically significant sites For example, the Catholic church in Santa Cruz, California in which a baptismal font dating back to the 1700s was broken up. Yet the BBC does not cover such stories…

On the other hand, there is a political dimension to these “price tag” incidents. I suspect that if a series of vandalisms, all citing the same ideology, were to occur in against churches in the US, the BBC would pick up the story.

I think an anti-Christian turn in some Ultra-Orthodox Judaism in Israel is more newsworthy than punk kids spray-painting things in Italy.

Perhaps you’re making rather too many assumptions about both ‘anti-Christian turns’ and about the nature of graffiti production in Italy?

Or burned to the ground. The church that I was convirmed in was burn in 2001, This was in Wheation Illinois, just outside of Chicago. 🤷

  1. Whoever did that isn’t very good at Hebrew, as you can see from the photograph:
custodia.org/default.asp?id=779&id_n=21823

Of course, it could be some punky Jewish kid, but it also could be someone trying to blame the “settlers”. There are many Arabs who live nearby, and they have been known to do things and blame the Jews. I would be happy to provide examples.
  1. There aren’t even any “settlements” around there.
  2. WHOEVER who did it, I hope that they are caught and are severely punished.

The “price tag” movement has only recently begun targeting Christian sites, correct? It seems to me that means there’s been an anti-Christian turn in their tactics.

Of course the main purpose may be to horrify the Israeli government more than to harass the Christians themselves, and they’ve found in the taboo subject of Jewish against Christian bigotry a way to get publicity and get under the Israeli government’s skin. That’s my guess at least.

And sure, any time a church is vandalized there’s probably some degree of anti-Christian or anti-religious motivation, even if it’s ultimately punk kids being bad because it’s fun. Certainly I did make the assumption that it is mostly teenagers who engage in that kind of vandalism. If that assumption is wrong then I concede the mistake.

What strikes me as remarkable is that the insults themselves are terribly childish in nature.

Italy does, of course, have the usual teenage graffiti but there’s also an awful lot of political graffiti that ranges from one end of the political spectrum to the other and any surface within reach gets covered with it.
