Lets leave it up to Christ to decide if my daughters (as Mormons)are christians. I do believe that he may say yes. For after all, they pray to heavenly father ever day in the name of Jesus Christ. Plus, they read the bible and know it quite well. Plus, they eat and drink the body and blood of christ every sunday. Plus, they attempt to live the commandments and keep the body holy.

I am sure that Christ would find them to be his followers. 🙂 Unless of course, you have inside information? 🤷
II think people should have access information about how Christiany has been understood within the Church. When Mormons pry folks away from one of the Christian Church’s like the Roman Catholic or Orthodox or Anglican Church, it is fair to fight back and try to explain from our side what they are really doing. They are leaving Chrisitianty for something else, a different religon that poses as being Christian. We can then go through the theological comparisons and and determine the truth as best we can.d Are Momons really Chrsitians or do they use the same words but mean something totally different than we do.

But you are correct, God will judge, not you or me. But that doesnt mean Christians ought to sit back and accept a total remake of every core dogmatic and thological understanding the Church has had, let them be “reworked” and then grant the title of being “Christian”.

i take exception to this statement. as i am of the mind that these horrors you speak of were most likely done out of political economic or social greed.
To begin, I do not take exception to you taking exception.
its too easy to blame religion and very manipulative to blame christianity for these atrocities.
Yes, it is easy to do so. Nevertheless, I am not blaming religion alone for such atrocities. For example, the Nazis focused the majority of their persecution on a single religious group, but it was not due to their own religious beliefs. Further, I am not attempting to make it appear that Christianity alone bears the blame for religious persecution; I am fully aware that other religions have and still do frequently persecute others.
i am not saying non were commited due to religion what i am saying is to allways say so provides a convinient smoke screen for the true causes.
Agreed. The vast majority of accusers during the Inquisition were motivated by personal agendas, rather than the legitimate fear that the accused were heretics.

Even so, if you carefully read my post, I do not say all horrors committed against religious groups were done so because of religion. I was deliberately non-specific because there are so many readily verifiable cases that prove religion was not the true case at all. However, there are an equal number of readily verifiable cases that prove it was (which is a moot point to make, as you yourself have acknowledged this is so).
for instance when discussing the roman empire i never see poeple say the roman empires conquest were the direct result of the plythesitic religions being practised in the empire.
This is true. However, I feel that it doesn’t quite illustrate your point about religion as a smoke screen, since the Romans never claimed their gods told them to go out and build an empire. The example about people reporting their neighbors to the Inquisition for personal gain is.
so to be blunt christianity did not do these atrocities poeple did. to say otherwise is misleading.
The idea of Christianity did not, certainly. It’s the old “guns don’t kill people, people kill people” argument. Even so, it appears you’re getting hung up on the fact that many different people (please read: not all Christians) who identifed themselves Christians either a) took the teachings of Christ and twisted them to suit their own purposes, and/or b) misinterpreted the teachings of Christ and did terrible things to Christians and non-Christians alike. You yourself admitted this when you said “i am not saying non[e] were commited due to religion.”

Lastly (and then I’ll shut up. Promise!), my post was aimed specifically at Why Me’s posts on this thread, which seemed to be a little one-sided in regards to the persecution discussion.

Kent Bylund received death threats from Mormons unhappy with the effort…
Why are you copy-pasting on this board? Especially since what you are copying has little relevance to the current point in the discussion. Not to mention the fact that we can read these things ourselves. Take the time to write a summary, make links to the topic, and actually be involved in the discussion. It would be much appreciated.

In the catholic faith, members go to Mass. I go to Mass. After mass, there is no sunday school or catechism where ideas are exchanged. It is only the mass and perhaps a little refreshments after the mass if the parish does such a thing. No ideas are being discussed at all. No history is being disussed. No understanding of the ‘bad’ popes and what they did etc.

In the lds faith, lds members attendtwo meetings beside their sacrament meeting: Sunday School and Preisthood/Relief Society as you know. There some discussion takes place as to doctrine. True, not everything is dicussed but still we have discussions based in the manuals and they can be quite thorough.

And so, I have no idea why the catholics on this board complain about mormon secrecy. I have never been to any discussion about catholic church history or doctrine as an adult. Nor as any ever been advertized in the parish or parishes that I have been to.

Now when I was younger, I did go to catechism to prepare for communion and confirmation. But after that, nothing was available. And I also know what I learned in catechism at that time was faith affirming. The difficult questions were not discussed.

Such is a life in contradiction as experieced on this board. 🤷
To Whyme, I went to a Catholic grade school and a Catholic High School. I learned an awful lot about church history, even those parts of our history that we wouldn’t want to brag about, but we discussed how and why these events happened. I learned all about the bad popes, etc., etc. Additionally, in adulthood I’ve gone to many, many diocesan religious education seminars. Every diocese I have ever belonged to, (All six of them) have had these seminars. Additionally, I’ve taken part in many weekend retreats and Bible studies. I also read a lot to deepen my understanding of what my church teaches. I have a pretty good library of books I’ve either purschased at Catholic book stores or ordered on line or by mail. Try ‘Ignatious Press’, they have numerous titles that teach all about church history and church teaching. It’s not all that hard to learn about the Catholic Church. I’ve been doing it for 59 years. The church doesn’t make it difficult for us to learn. However, alot of people just aren’t interested in making the effort. They show up for their one hour a week and go home. Is that the church’s fault? I don’t think so. I know a few former classmates who insist they never learned any of the stuff I did. They were in the same classroom I was. They were taught by the same nuns. Where were they ?, Off in la-la land somewhere?
I was however very fortunate to have very devout parents who reinforced at home what I learned in church and at school. Perhaps that is why I remember them so well. I was blessed with an appreciation and a longing to know more. I am still today happily and joyfully Catholic. Wish everyone was! GHBGTM

Hello Barbara!
Thank you for the post. Your post was very interesting. And I am glad that you are happy in your faith. It is good to be a happy catholic.

My point to my post was a simple one: to show that not only mormons are ignorant of their faith and history. Catholics are also. The historical events that you described in your post happened hundreds of years ago. For mormon events, we just need to go back 170 years to the present. Very recent. As you know when those events that you described happened the RC church received a lot of rejection and criticism at that time and for awhile after. Now such events are in the distant past and do not touch catholics so closely. For mormons it is a little different.

We all have to get used to history and to the events that shape history. For catholics, injustices perceived commited by the catholic church led to the reformation with luthernism taking the lead. Catholics left the church and joined other churches. Feelings ran high and most of these disagreements were doctrinal and historical. Now, such events no longer touch the average catholic. The past burns the events away very well, especially if such events happened hundreds of years ago. Mormons also need to get used to history and I am of the opinion that the lds church needs to address its issues more clearly.

I share that opinion, and I do believe it is beginning to do so and that things will improve, perhaps slowly, with time.

How can Mormons address history in an objective manner when the “foundation of their faith” is a book which also mangles history and mocks American Indian legends? Do they then need to repudiate the Book of Mormon as scripture, while acknowleging that there is some worthwhile truth in it?

Or— are they on the verge of doing so? 🤷

Over on the mormonapologetics board there is a thread from Chris Smith. It states 7 compelling reasons for book of mormon authenticity. Now Chris is not mormon but a critic. You can find it over there, either on page one or two of the threads. Mormons have a history outside **As Marx aptly put it: Men make their own history outside the book of mormon.**and certainly mormons have made their own history. The book of mormon is only a small part of that history.

authenticity of book of mormon------why dont you post that comic stuff here. i would like a gigle. if you believe it then show it.
i hope this has found you well

I needed to correct my last post by including *outside the book of mormon. *

I would but I don’t believe they allow pasting and copying from their threads.

Too many antimormons out there in cyberland. 😉

But head on over and see for yourself: www.mormonapologetics.org

Click on the discussion thread and the way you go. 👍

The seven evidences are on the second page heading for the third page. The original poster is Chris Smith.
