Anti-Women Quotes from Early Christian Figures

I think I remember looking up these quotes a while back and the earliest source I found for them was some feminist book written in the late 70s (which didn’t have any source of its own for them) so I assumed they were fabricated. I can’t remember if it was a Karen Armstrong book, it was some kind of feminist theology book, but that seems like something that she would do.

Of course the process I undertook was more than what the majority of people will do when confronted with these quotes, which is to accept them unquestioningly as gospel truth because it supports their prejudices.

I think you can take any quote out of context and make it look good or bad. Jesus never said anything negative specifically about women and this was my first thought.

Now get back in the kitchen…good girls!

Joking :p.

I have no idea if the pro woman or the anti woman quotes are genuine because I don’t speak the languages in which the quotes were originally written and I have no idea if the translations are accurate or if accurate translations have been doctored by someone. The quotes provided are not accompanied by a link to a website and I don’t have the months to spare even chasing up the English versions of these quotes genuine or not.
I was the one who compiled the “pro-woman” quotes, and I also don’t speaking the languages in which they were written or know whether the translations are accurate. If you like, if you have any desire to look up a particular quote, I’d be happy to give you the link to the full-length writing from which I took it.
I would suggest that every one displays due caution and ask for more evidence of authenticity than just a quote which may, as many have said, been taken out of context.
I agree, it is important to look up the context. I did provide a reference for everything I quoted, mostly in parentheses at the end of each quotation, and those parenthetical references can mostly be googled to find the full documents and the context, but if you are having trouble with any of them feel free to say something and I’d be happy to send you the whole link.

Notice that none of the “anti-woman” quotes have any source documentation.
