Any country music fans?

Most of what is called country today is nothing more than pop mainstream rock music, real country music is dead. Most of the so called singers are trashy unskilled phonys.

I DO tend to agree with you CatholicDude.
That is one of the reasons why I stopped listening to coutnry in 1997. Howver I returned this year under the banner that ‘things change’. For better or worse, there are STILL some singers who STILL sing the way country really IS: Reba McEntire, George Stait, Randy Travis, Dwight Yoakam.

The drum beats they use are fake and sound pop/rock. It seems like the ‘baby boomer crowd’ still wants to ‘Rock’ before they are too old to, so coutnry music has been transformed.

Question: Do you think there is more or less, steel guitars, banjos, and ‘fiddles’ used today?
My answer: They are still used but seem to be int he background now than 25 years ago when the instruments were in the foreground.

I like secular country, rock, classical, and more. I love Christian rock and a few other Christian genres. I’ve noticed that country singers (Martina McBride is one example in “Blessed” and “God’s Will”) seem to be more open to discussing their faith in their music than rock singers are, and that’s part of what attracts me to country music.

On her latest CD, there’s a song “Reluctant Daughter” that is absolutely beautiful!!! I Love that she is very open with faith in her music.

The problem with most of the guitars banjos and fiddles is they have become synthesizers and not the real thing. All those things are hooked up to sound systems that create the music while the guy doesnt really show his true skills. Yes the real thing is still used but they are usually in the background.

That’s really sad! The more society becomes advanced, the precious things of the past are shoved out the door!

Over the last few months, I have been listening to country music a lot. I used to be more of a fan of rock music and classic rock, but so much of it seems so sad or angry. I find country music a lot more uplifting and generally favorable to traditional values and Christianity. What do you all think?

I like country music. George Straight, Johhny Cash, Kris Kristofferson, and many others.
 
Sorry folks, I can’t stand country music. (Aaagh! Don’t throw that at me!!!). Seriously though, I can’t think of a music genre that makes me more depressed.

I do like “old” country music (does bluegrass and western swing count, BTW?), but I can’t stand this “pop” country that they play on the radio most of the times these days. There is always an exception or two… “Long Black Train” and “Beer for my Horses” come immediately to mind… I like those a lot.

Some of it is depressing, brotherholf. I heard once that whenever the U.S. has economic problems the number of country albums purchased increases. Perhaps misery loves company.

But like coralewis I’ve always found it interesting that country music is one of the few–if not the only–genres of music where you can sing about drowning your broken heart in a pool of whiskey one minute and about your love for Jesus the next. Actually, I listen to Sunday Morning Country Oldies (8-Noon on 99.5 for those of you around Boston) on my way to Mass!

I Love This Bar is Toby Keith and it was released in 2004.

What I find is that the lyrics of country music, can’t be beat!. Some songwriters can really “paint” a picture or tell a great story in under 4 minutes.
Listen to Blaine Larsen’s How Do You That Lonely? (2005) for it’s emotion and contemplation.
OR
Honky Tonk U (2005-current song) by Toby Ketih. The song is Actually autobiographical. You wouldn’t pick up on this unless you know about his start in the music business.

The Chain of Love (2000) by Clay Walker, for it’s storytelling with a great ending! (that’s for those who haven’t heard the song before).

One that makes Me cry, Blake Shelton’s The Baby (2003), another song ending, especially the last verse, that will get you :crying:

There are hundreds of other songs crafted so that you can receive the right emotions you are looking or wanting to express.

Which songs do this for you? Doesn’t have to be sad expressions either. Which songs make you just ant to be happy and ‘let loose’?
 
I grew up in the midwest and enver listened to country. I then went to college in Tennessee, and vowed I would never be a fan. I did good my freshman year. Then my sophmore year came - I was driving home after leaving my boyfriend at the airport to go back home to New Hampshire. I was in the middle of no where, and my tape player in my car broke. So, an old country station was all that was coming in. All of a sudden a voice was “talking” to me… I thought I was halluciniating. It was Reba McIntyre’s Whoever’s in New England. I couldn’t believe how every word seemed to be right on key. I didn’t catch the artist at the time, so I spent the next few weeks listening to every country station hoping to hear it again. I guess in the mean time I got hooked, and I’ve been listening to it for about 8 years now.

I love Toby Keith, and Martina McBride. They just spit out what’s on their minds!
 
Oh, and I can’t listen to Streets of Heaven by Shely Wright without losing my mascara. It was pitiful when I was pregnant and would be wailing in the car when it played. My toddlers would stare at me in my review mirror as if I was possessed. However, for some reason I felt bad for all the cancer babies if I switched channels. Needless to say, St. Jude’s got a hefty donation from me that year!

And Collin Raye really does have some great “story” songs as well.
 
I’m all about Joe Nichols, Jamie O’Neal, and Brad Paisley so far as the modern stuff goes, and George Strait and Clint Black from a little while back. I enjoy most anything currently on the radio, but nothing beats “Spend My Time” by Clint Black and “Run” and “Carrying Your Love With Me” by George Strait. The best current songs, in my humble opinion, are “What’s a Guy Gotta Do” by Joe Nichols and “Bless the Broken Road” by Rascal Flatts.

Listen to Joe Nichols "What’s A Guy Gotta Do’ and then you realilze that he sounds like a YOUNG George Strait of the mid 1980’s.
If this song was around in the mid’s 80’s, George would have done it. The melody fits George to a tee.

Maybe someday George and Joe Nichols could sing a duet…?

I am listening to WSM650AM over the Internet and found out that Kenny Chesney got married on Sunday and Mindy McCready’s ex-boyfriend beat her unconsciencoulsy! :eek: Mindy is recovering, so ways the news reports.

No one is exempt to life’s ups and downs!
