As and Anglo-Catholic, I caution you to be careful. There is a schism underway with the Episcopal church throughout the world currently and it basically comes down to ordaining homosexuals and ordination of women as the two biggies. I know that the grass looks greener on the other side, but with careful examination you often find that it was just a mirage.
The TEC is currently on a death spiral. When you do not need Jesus to get to heaven but what ever makes you feel good, there is a problem there. Also, when you change your belief system to be adaptable to the latest trends or beliefs you can not stay true to God’s word.
I think it is great that you are questioning and I encourage you to always question things. But, taking caution from 2 Timothy 4:3 “For the time is coming when people will not put up with sound doctrine, but having itching ears, they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own desires, 4 and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander away to myths.”
A lot of people take the Bible and use one small quote from a verse to make their point, failing to look not only at the previous and post verses, but also the meaning and context of the entire passage. You can pull a verse out of the Bible and make any point you want.
So, where am I going with all of this, good question. I hope all of our ultimate goals are to join our Heavenly Father and his Triumphant Son in heaven. With tens of thousands of churches and denominations out there to choose from, all claiming to be the one true way to heaven, I have to sit back and think who’s wrong and do I want to be a part of something that may keep me from my ultimate goal of heaven?
All I can tell you to do is to be very open and honest with yourself. Read, study, pray that the Holy Spirit will guide you in your decision. Ask yourself, is what I am thinking the Truth or what I want to be the truth? What is truth? What I myself believe about something as being true, may not be if it goes against what God deems as Truth in his written word. It doesn’t matter what I think or believe, if it goes against what God says, and I know that I a sinful being, not even worthy to join the dog’s getting the scraps under the table, I am not going to change the mind of God.
Before you jump ship and join the Episcopal church, make sure you didn’t cut off your nose to spite your face. I personally would hate to make an error that has eternal consequences. The only perfect place we have is waiting for us in heaven and God willing we get there.
You can not pick and choose what to believe when it comes down to being a member of a church. Jesus did not give us guidelines to pick and choose from like going down a cafeteria line. We are either IN or OUT. There is no in between. The rules and teachings of the Church were worked out by many people much smarter than me and I have to have faith that God was guiding them when these were created. Even if I don’t think something is correct, I have to have try to leave my feelings out of it and Trust that God knows what is truly the best for me and not worry about what the world is focused on. The world and its concerns are a distraction from getting to heaven.
God Bless
