On season 5, which we are currently watching, one of the young men made a key Lime Pie and Paul Hollywood said that it was one of the best things he had ever tasted on that show!
You’re right, the British palate definitely doesn’t seem to favor super sweet. I know a lot of Americans who don’t like super sweet–whenever I’ve made Divinity Fudge (which is basically pure sugar), most of my friends who try it take just one small piece and then say, “It’s just so sweet!”
I, on the other hand, eat Divinity Fudge by the handful, which is one reason I don’t make it very often.
The other reason I don’t make it very often is that it’s a pain–you have to beat it forever, and if the humidity isn’t just right, the candy doesn’t set and I end up throwing it all away.
I had an aunt who specialized in making Divinity Fudge–every Christmas she made pink and white Divinity with black walnuts that she cracked and picked herself. Mmmmm! (So the “sweet tooth” runs in our family.)
I would be a terrible Brit.
