Yes, Paul is still there - scaring the contestants with his eyes and occasionally giving out handshakes 😆

That’s good! Why is he scaring people with his eyes? Thanks for all the info you
provided.

He likes to walk around and see what the contestants are doing during the challenges. Often he’ll give them a look but won’t tell them what he means, so they don’t know if they’re doing the right thing or not. Sort of like how Mary Berry had a particular look if a contestant was going to do something she thought was wrong.

Great show! I’ve been watching it for years, and I really love the shows that have say, a recipe from the 1400’s, or one that was “King Henry’s favorite”, or any one that leaves the baking time out, the final shape of what they are making out, or some other vital thing out, and the bakers have to use their knowledge and skill to make it all work. My PBS station is KVIE, and it’s shown on there at 9:00 on Friday nights.

I don’t like things too sweet, like fudge or moon pies.

I do like British sweets like sticky toffee pudding and Bakewell tarts.

However, I do like pecan pie.

To me, a slice of heaven. The best pie I’ve ever tasted.

A frangipane by the way is a filling made of ground almonds, butter, sugar and eggs.

I like it
started watching a few years ago
there is something very calming and dare I say, intellectual about the show
it is so much different from ‘merican shows.

I like a lot of BBC shows though
if I am feeling low I can always watch an old episode of Top Gear to lift my spirits
those three guys have a direct line to my funny bone

The last series and all new series will be on Channel 4 in the UK, but the programme and format is the same. There was a backlash when the programme moved, and Mel, Sue and Mary left. The new hosts are Noel Fielding and Sandi Toksvig, and the new judge is Prue Leith.
Oh, I did not known that
too bad, in general reboots with new hosts seldom work for me

John is the winner. I thought it was going to be Brendan. All 3 were good finalists.

I will have to go to Netflix and watch previous episodes.

If you have the time and inclination, watch an entire season–it’s so much fun to see the show from start to finish. The first weeks feature fairly easy recipes (I actually made one and it worked). You develop a “relationship” with each baker, and it’s sad when your favorite is let go, but it’s fun to see who continues to hang in there.

What my husband and I love about the show is that there’s no screaming or swearing from the judges, no insults. Even when people are criticized, it’s done in a gentle way.

I remember during the season when Nadia won, Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip were apparently watching the show!

We also love the accents of all the competitors. During Season 1, a Scottish man was competing, and at one point, he recited a Burns poem! So fun, but at times, we had a hard time understanding him! Same for some of the other actors with strong accents–we have to rewind and run it back several times sometimes, and even then, we end up looking up certain words to see what they’re talking about.

I also love the little history vignettes–I loved the one about eel pies! I had read about eel pies in an old “Avengers” novel yeaars ago (Steed and Emma Peel Avengers, , not the super hero Avengers on the movie screens today), and all these years, I thought it was just fiction–but it’s not! Personally, I think eel pies sound disgusting, but it was interesting hearing about how nutritious eels are.

A few years ago, Mary Berry came to the United States for the The Great American Baking Show–that was really fun! I remember my husband and I loved a young lady from the American South–I think it might have been North Carolina! I wish they would do more of this show, because we recognized the recipes and they looked like something we would actually make!

Also, Wisonsin Public TV is doing “The Great Wisconsin Bake-Off,” but I think it’s online only. Sounds fun, though!

Mid August isn’t exactly the time for baking, but in a month or so–mmmm! Nothing beats baking a delicious treat on a cold cloudy Midwest day! It’s especially fun if you invite someone over to help eat it.

Yes, that is what I mean by previous episodes - I meant to say seasons. I think I saw 4 episodes of this season.
I thought the pies they made with meats and veggied were strange, then I remembered we eat chicken, beef and turkey pot pies in America.

Yes, the judges are gentle with the contestants and the judges egos don’t take over the show.

Eel pies sound very disgusting!

I love all baking competitions! The only thing I can bake are Toll House Cookies, so I really appreciate the talent these people have, and the shows are fun!

I love to watch them, too!

These contestants/competitors on these shows really know how to bake beyond just the basics, if you ask me. 🙂

Some of these desserts and breads and cakes seem to be really complex/complicated, especially when they have to create a theme and then cover it with fondant or use marzipan to make little animals or what not.

Sometimes you’ll see all of this hard work and effort go into something, only to see the creation collapse! đŸ˜« đŸ˜©

I’m not creative enough to design one of those elaborate cakes, let alone bake it. My mom was, though. She was a fantastic cook and baker.

I feel so bad for the contestants when one of their creations collapses!

We wonder if everyone in Britain bakes these fancy treats, of if they just buy the boxed versions and whip them up in five minutes.

I’m especially curious about the crackers. We watched the crackers episode in disbelief, wondering why anyone would spend a couple of hours baking a few dozen savory crackers when we just run to the store and choose from dozens of varieties of boxed crackers. We especially love Wheat Thins.

When I lived in England, most people just went to a bakery to get cakes, cookies, etc.
