Any Heavy Metal fans in here?

First off, I love Heavy Metal.

Some of my favourites:
  1. Black Sabbath
  2. Rush
  3. Ozzy (I know, nobody on this board approves of his lifestlye)
  4. Judas Priest
  5. Van Halen
  6. Pantera
  7. Zakk Wylde
  8. Soundgarden
  9. Creed
  10. Metallica
I play Heavy Metal in front of my 2 young kids. Maybe not the best idea but not the worst.

It’s not as if I am playing “Gangsta Rap” with lyrics laced with obsenties.

I like heavy riffs, and let’s face it, 90% of us don’t listen to music for role models, we listen because we enjoy it. I am not here to judge or condone their lifestyle. It’s none of my business.

If we were in their shoes, how do we know our lifestyles wouldn’t be similiar?

I like most of those bands too. I wonder… bands like Tool, Alice in Chains and Ozzy, are they off the playlist for a proper Catholic?
 
How does everyone feel about the song “I Wish I Had An Angel” by Nightwish? Blasphemy?
 
Recently, I’ve hung out with some younger friends who don’t really know their metal music roots. What I mean to say is I’m saying my generation of metal is where punk comes into its own and the various others started to get an identity – i.e. thrash, speed, goth, industrial, etc. and now I feelz the old in me!!! 😃

I’m sort of on the fence with that one. It’s more or less using religious imagery to describe yearning for a romantic relationship. So I don’t know that “blasphemy” would be the word I’d use to describe it.

Technically, blasphemy is directed towards God, not angels or any other part of creation. The Catechism defines blasphemy as “uttering against God - inwardly or outwardly - words of hatred, reproach, or defiance”. I wouldn’t say the song falls into that category. Sacrilegious would be the word for it, if anything.

It’s pretty darn catchy, though. :o
