Any Heavy Metal fans in here?

I remember the first place I ever heard Nirvana or Pearl Jam was on MTV’s “Headbanger’s Ball.” I remember thinking at the time that it was pretty cool and was sort of “metal” but that soon passed away quickly. I knew a lot of metalheads that initially liked groups like Pearl Jam and especially Soundgarden, but they sort of grew disenchanted with them as more and more alternative and indie rock groups came out that were clearly not heavy metal.

I think a lot of metalheads then gave up on the heavier alternative music and retreated back to the underground and awaited metal’s return. We’ll never see the glory days of Metallica, Slayer and Anthrax again, but Slayer is still out there producing, Metallica seems to have their heads screwed on again, and there are various reincarnations of Testament and Exodus out there. So who knows.

Funny you should mention that. That is very similar to my experience back in the early 90’s. At first, I enjoyed some of the alternative bands like the three you mentioned, as well as Alice in Chains and Nine Inch Nails. But when they became the “mainstream” and produced a whole sub-genre all their own (complete with vastly inferior copy-cat bands), suddenly they didn’t sound the same and I quickly grew tired of them.

Of course, at around that time I also discovered Dream Theater and Savatage, so I went off in a different direction. \m/

The problem with Exodus and Slayer is that their last CD’s were so amazingly blasphemous that I could not bear to buy them. It’s unfortunate, too, because the musical proficiency on both of those records is impressive.

Metallica’s newest record is great. I like every song on it.

Jon, I don’t have anything recent by Exodus, I’d just heard that they were around, but I suspect you’re right and I’ve hesitated over buying Slayer’s last two albums due to those very concerns.

Joe, Andrew W.K. is a little hard to describe. I think he’s pretty much a one man band that plays all the instruments. His lyrics tend more towards partying and stuff like that nothing too deep or vulgar. There’s little melody or harmonics in the music pretty much straight driving guitars and drums with a little piano and electronic stuff mixed in. I can’t really seem to find the right words to describe this but, once again there is stuff on Youtube. The one song he is known for is “Party Hard.” Give it a look.

It’s too bad, I think. They are otherwise very classic thrash albums.

I have been looking for newer bands that can make music like that (minus the blasphemy) but have not been able to find any. Suggestions would be appreciated…

A new band I’ve listened a little to is called Trivium, they’re very much like early thrash metal.

Oh I have Probot! I remember a few years ago when that came out, I was one of those nerds that waited outside the music shop until it opened so I could buy it. Ha-ha! Probot is a good one. The Shake Your Blood video is a bit much, but no one can deny that song is pure metal.

I wasn’t that bad to wait for Probot, but I did have it within a day or two. The only album I waited until midnight to get was Metallica’s “Garage, Inc.” On the way home from the store my friend and I blasted “Free Speech for the Dumb” at 12:30 at night.

The only exposure I have to King Diamond are from the songs that Metallica covered. Once I heard the originals I thought Metallica did a better job than King Diamond. I remember the first time I saw a picture of him was in a Circus magazine and it was the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever seen. He looked more Munster than menacing in that clown paint and with the “bone” microphone stand. I always wondered how anybody could take groups like that seriously.

Oddly enough, from what I’ve seen, the musician with the most occult cred, Jimmy Page, rarely gets mentioned. The ones were more show than anything like Ozzy, Motley Crue, Alice Cooper etc. get all the press when Page was the one buying mansions, having seances and attempting to practice this stuff (I’m not sure if he still is or not). Maybe I’m really missing something huge but I can’t say I ever really seriously bought all the hyperbole about devil music.

Ha-ha! Good story.

I hear a lot of stuff about Ozzy being supposedly “satanic” or whatever, but I just don’t see it. The lyrics to “After Forever” from Black Sabbath are more Christian than some Christian bands. He’s certainly no role model, but a satanist he ain’t.

I was Catholic growing up and left the Church in my teens. I hung around with the metal crowd, but not because they were anti-Church or anything. I think it was more a matter of not knowing where to fit in and being really confused. So now when I see these kids at shows, I always end up praying for them when I get home. I know what they’re going through.

One other thing…you mentioned Garage, Inc. That CD drove me nuts! Not because of the covers they did, but because I was one of those kids that bought all the Metallica singles on vinyl just to have the B-sides. Then they went and put them all on CD. I’ve been toting those records around with me for almost 20 years and watched the collectible value drop over night! Ha-ha!

one needs a vast collection in the tractor especially when the days run into 16 or more hrs…Garage Inc had that one on tape…one of my most remebered lyrics from ozzy is “too many churchs and only one God.”…early on in the thread there was some discussion on traditional church music,which i myslef do prefer too…as for my music give me Beethoveen any day over Britteny…one tractor i spend all night in only has an am radio,so i listen to the oldie station(which sometimes sounds like the tunes of me youth )then in the evening they do about 3hrs of protestant messages,so the station is tuned to the classicals…one night i heard the orginal version of Mettalica’s Whiskey in a Jar…there wasn’t a lot of difference in the way it came out…then they played a really good peice i can’t rtemember the names anymore,so i was looking at the music rack with my wife who was looking at the metal tunes when a sales clerk noticed and mentioned how odd we looked…
