Any Heavy Metal fans in here?

I like some metal and heavy metal. I guess Metallica would probably be my favorite metal band.
 
Personally, Iron Maiden is my ABSOLUTE favorite band, and I, too, prefer the traditional church music!

You know, I think I’ve figured out why most metal fans prefer traditional music: most contemporary Christian music ends up sounding more like pop, which is most metal fans’ worst nightmare (especially me). 😛
 
Hmm, maybe we should start an international poll to see how many Catholics who like heavy metal also like traditional Church music?

I thought I would feel the same way. I’ve been listening to Nightwish ever since their first album “Angels Fall First” came out back in '97. But I decided to give the new album a chance and was really impressed. I think it might be my favorite album of theirs. (Of course, all of their albums are so good, it’s hard to pick a favorite.) Tarja’s solo stuff is pretty good, too.

Did anyone else see the US Synchronized swim team use the opening track of “Dark Passion Play” for their routine at the Olymics in August? 🙂

Although I prefer Nightwish with Tarja the original singer, I’ve heard some of the tracks from her solo album and was unimpressed, but some of the tracks from NW’s new album are pretty good, so I’m inclined to give them time to grow on me.

By the way, I just picked up my first Kamelot album, The Black Halo recently. Wow. It floored me. I can’t believe they are an American band. I think even a non-metal fan could enjoy this.

I agree Tarja’s solo stuff isn’t on par with her Nightwish stuff, but I still enjoy it. Especially her Christmas album. 🙂 I do like the new Nightwish album better than Tarja’s solo albums, though.

Kamelot is another of my favorites. Can you believe I started listening to them before Kahn joined the band? I can’t even sit through their first two albums anymore as they pale in comparison to what they’re doing now! Karma is still my favorite album, but The Black Halo, Ghost Opera, and Epica are all very close seconds (roughly in that order). If you get the chance to get any more Kamelot albums, I’d start with those. Siege Perilous and Fourth Legacy still have some solid tracks (and Kahn on vocals), but they are more transitional between their earlier sound and their present sound. Dominion and Eternity I would only recommend if you’re a completist and just have to have all their albums (unless they someday re-release them with Kahn on vocals).

There aren’t too many solid American metal bands. I wonder why that is? 🤷 If not for Dream Theater and Kamelot, we probably would have completely lost the respect of the international metal community (and both of those bands have non-American singers!). 😉

IE '90s Black Metal - such as Burzum, Absurd, Emperor, Darkthrone, Immortal, Summoning etc. Bands who call themselves Satanic - though bear in mind that they normally only call themselves that to nark you off - they are more pagan and nature orientated. Some of them do have racist ideologies - but if people can listen to the Rolling Stones without being drug addicts, Michael Jackson without being paedophiles etc then I think that I can listen to Black Metal without being a murdering, Church-burning Nazi. If anyone disagrees… well, you’re wrong and you over-estimate how much music can affect one’s mentality.

In a similar vein, I also enjoy Death Metal - such as Morbid Angel, Carcass, Amputated, Desecration, Death, Demilich, Devourment, Suffocation, Nile etc. For the record - most of their gory lyrics are done a) for amusement and b) to nark you off, so if you get narked off you’ve missed the joke!

Okay, I’ll respond to your posts. 🙂 I don’t want you to feel ignored. 😉

I think that no one has responded so far simply because most of the metalheads here aren’t big fans of black metal or death metal, and they have no idea who you’re talking about. I know that a lot of the lyrical themes that many find problematic with such bands are done more for show or to irk people than they are any sort of genuine desire to worship Satan. Most of the metal bands that people call “satanic” would be more accurrately described as “pagan” (or perhaps “neo-pagan”).

I’ve known a number of Catholics who listen to at least some metal, but I’ve only met one so far who listens to the type of metal that you have listed above. We can all speculate as to why that is, but I can’t really say for sure. Personally, I think the reason is that it just doesn’t appeal to a lot of people. I enjoy power/prog metal, but I don’t particularly care for black/death metal. For me, that has more with the music and the vocals than it does the lyrics. (Of course, if the lyrics are a bit too anti-Christian, that is a big turn-off for me).
 
Ditto on Joe’s point. Musically, death grunting/screaming doesn’t appeal to me, even if the lyrics were squeaky clean. It’s like when I bought a Leaves Eyes album. Things were going along swimmingly with the female vocals, then the dude came in with his death grunting and it just makes me :rolleyes: . I might (emphasize might) make an exception for Wintersun, but I’d need to sample more first. I realize not all death/black metal employs blasphemous lyrics or turns listeners evil on its own. But uttering blasphemy is an objevctively wrong act–meaning it doesn’t matter if their intention is merely to nark people off (which is a better intention than blasphemy I’ll grant, but is still not a good intention.)

It’s too bad it has no appeal for me because I actually do a pretty good death grunt, which I do as a total joke like when it’s time for bed and I tell the kids, *“BRUSH YOUR TEEEEEEETH! WOAAAAAAAAHHHH!” 😃 *Maybe I should do a Death metal parody album.

Good points. If you decide to do that parody album, I’d like to help. We can do “Dueling Grunters”. (RORR RORR RORRR RORR RORRR RORR RORRR RORR RORRRRRR!!!) 😃

I can deal with the death grunts in moderation. For example, Ayreon, Adagio, and even the Christian metal band Divinefire will occassionally employ a few grunts. But in these cases, there is a particular purpose and the grunts are short lived (only a line or two). I don’t think I could handle it for a whole album.
 
Bit catty to deride the sort of music I like with your ‘death grunt’ (whatever the hell they are) thing just because you don’t understand it… I don’t understand why people would listen to some of the weak stuff you guys have talked about. All this prog widdling and weak Christian metal! Seems like people are into Christian metal because of the lyrical content - which is prett shaky ground for liking music really, just read poetry?

Death grunting (or growling) seems to be the correct term. See the wiki, en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_grunt. I also see the term regularly used by death metal fans at metal storm forums. If you have another term that describes the vocal style that you like better, I’ll be happy to use it. I’m not trying to challenge you. I haven’t derided the music, I simply tried to explain why it doesn’t appeal to me. Also, I haven’t mentioned Christian metal. In general, I find most of it to be pretty laughable (Like Hank Hill: “You’re not making Christianity better, you’re making rock n’ roll worse!” :D). I believe you are taking too much offense here. Heck, I was even trying to grant that not all of it is blasphemous which frankly, requires quite a bit of accomodation.

I certainly intended no disrespect to you, I was just sharing a personal opinion about my music preferences (as you were). I’ll be the first to admit that I am largely ignorant of the finer distinctions in black and death metal. I (perhaps incorrectly) equate death metal with a “growly” singer. That’s probably a vast oversimplification, but that’s all my (limited) experience is with that kind of metal.

If you don’t like Christian metal, or prog metal, I don’t hold it against you. I’d be the first to admit that the music I listen to is not most people’s cup of tea. It may seem weak to you (and that’s fine), but it seems far too intense for many others (like my wife).

I think the lyrics are a very important part of music. Sure, even with the best lyrics in the world, if the music stinks, it’s not worth listening to. But good lyrics greatly increase my appreciation for the music. Grant it, it’s much easier for me to overlook poor lyrics if the music is good than vice versa.

One of my favorite bands is Skyclad (a folk metal band). They certainly fall into the “pagan” category. Some of their lyrics are quite critical of religion and Christianity, but then, the lyrics are critical of pretty much everyone and everything. And most of the anti-religious lyrics have more to do with hypocrisy they see in Christians rather than with doctrinal issues. Their singer has far from the best voice (and it is a bit “rough” or “growly”). But the lyrics are extremely well written, and the singer is nothing if not passionate. And I like the music. Do I think that most other people would like them? Not at all. Maybe a song or two off their mellower albums (they do a great cover of “Come on Eileen.” ;)), but largely, it probably doesn’t appeal to many people.

If you two haven’t, get into the County Medical Examiners stat. They’re a goregrind band comprised of three actual coroners (the bassist is over 60 years old 😃 ) and are pretty much devoted to sounding like early Carcass. Plus, given their day jobs, the lyrics can actually be educational (and still gross)!

I’m not much of a metalhead, but as with any other musical genre I’ve got some lurking around here. Let’s see…

Honestly, my impression of Nightwish is ‘Qntal is better’ 😛 More traditional, more variety of language and music, less angst, less elfy-welfy power metal silliness. It’s not as hard/heavy, but then Nightwish isn’t really music to mosh to either.

And Laurent, that Growl Karaoke video was fantastic 😃
