If this is in the wrong category , please feel free to move it.
However it is news.
Note how between the dates of 4/12 and 4/15 there is an unusual spike in deaths. It doesn’t seem to “fit” with the numbers around it.
My own tracking of new cases in my county correlates with this spike.

Any ideas what was happening around this time?

There were an additional ~4k deaths reported that had not previously been part of the reporting scheme, which counted only people who had tested positive of COVID-19. The additional deaths were being tracked by the health department. the relation to COLVID-19 was considered probable because of the decedents symptoms and medical history.

I wondered if it was an issue of criterion for reporting.
But would that account for it looking libe a spike?
These are cases in one day. Shouldn’t it have remained high?

Same thing happened with the new cases in my county. A one day spike then back down to the previous levels…

I would assume that is the day they added in all the previous deaths they had been leaving out?

If they were tracking these other deaths and became sure they were Covid related, it would just be an accounting spike…not an actual one day spike. That’s my best guess!

No. I think the spike came from the backlog of cases that needed to be reported under the more comprehensive criteria. Once caught up, the daily numbers are bumped up relatively little.

This sounds like the answer alright, I heard something about “undercounting” the deaths. That was just recently in the news. You are to be commended for catching that.

And I believe this in regards to NY. Something like this.

New York, New Jersey report record coronavirus deaths, fear death toll undercounted
