There are some saints I would like to increase devotion to and I designed and printed out some holy cards–(a picture of the saint on the front and a prayer on the back–and then lamenated). They actually turned out really, really well. I was wondering if there were any requirements to distributing them? I was planning on just putting them on the table where people often leave various devotional items.

might clear it with your priest at least just to make sure there ar enot problems with the prayer, especially if this table is at your parish

A holy card of our St. Wendelin, Patron of our Parish, has a small note in a box saying “compliments of G… L…” (full name.)

I think it would probably be easy for you to give a talk on your favorite Saints that you think may be overlooked, to the school kids, and then pass out the cards! Or to the Altar Society, etc. Tell your Pastor what you have in mind. I have never seen anything like that at St. W. where holy cards are there for the taking, except for the Parish Patron Saint. People have passed out holy cards, for everyone, for special things like Priests leavings, Consecration of Churches, Prayers for Parish and Diocesan, and Papal, Funerals, and, at school. Usually cards are received in the mail, for Saints, with info of their life in a pamphlet, and, what they are prayed to for. I’ve read the lives of the Saints all through childhood, from a book that we have. I think it helps us deal with adversity, to know how the Saints suffered, and their charity and self effacements.

Thanks for the great post!

As my father-in-law had a Memorial Mass and not a Funeral Mass (long story involving an over-possessive stepmother), we were not able to prevail upon the services of the mortuary to print up holy cards for the occassion.

After looking on the web and being horrified at the prices of both the few places that printed holy cards AND the price of the blank sheets that were holy-card sized for the computer printer, I fiddled around with Word and Avery 5388 (Index Card) by pushing the “details” button. I managed to pull the margins into the shape of a holy card, ran a print, and measure it against a “real” holy card until i had the right size.

When I had a good margin and 4 to a sheet, I then found some oldies-but-goodies Catholic clip art in public domain. I used Royal Brites Matte Photo Paper. I did some test runs on plain paper first, to be sure the front matched the back without cutting off the prayer or my father-in-law’s name.

The old ladies from my father-in-law’s home town loved them!!! But the good reaction from the cousins and aunts made it worth the effort.

So, GO FOR IT, and enjoy the effort of making them as well as giving them.
