The idea that the immense non-human complexity in the universe has a “natural way of arising” is precisely what is at issue. If such immense complexity can arise without intelligence yet produce everything that exists including human intelligence that in turn produces complex technology, then there is the assumption that the basic random elements of the universe have the ability through a completely non-intelligent process, without planning or purpose, to organize themselves to build universities and rockets to the moon. It is much easier to believe in God than to accept such a theory.
If a man designs a sentient computer program that goes and invents a cure for cancer, he cannot honestly say that he was the one who invented that cure.

I prefer to go with what the evidence suggests than what seems more probable.

I prefer both the evidence and what seems more probable. The notion of rocks to rockets is much too illogical and improbable, and with the observable evidence of human intelligence creating complex technology, the existence of a “superior reasoning power” seems most likely as the explanation for the immense complexity of the universe.

It’s not rocks to rockets. As I said, the man who invents true AI cannot take credit for its accomplishments.

The probability is broken up into an incredible amount of not-so-improbable steps, where successful biological agents have an edge over others. That’s how evolution works.

Where the evidence and what seems to be common sense conflict, I go with the evidence. Don’t forget, reality is unaffected by what we want it to be, rather, it is absolute.

The “evidence” for your view should include observed abiogenesis as well as the observed speciation especially of organisms having very short lifespans and rapid reproduction cycles. Do you know of any recent scientific papers published in the last 5 years that report observed instances of speciation? If you have the names of articles and their authors, I can try to contact them.

Greetings

I would reccomend a couple of books I have read personally:

“Science and the Evidence for Design in the Universe”
“Handbook of Christian Apologetics”
“Eucharistic Miracles”

When confronted with Atheism, it is important to remember that we can not give them Faith, only the Holy Spirit can give some one the gift of Faith. Our Job is to “remove intellectual obstacles” in the way of the gift. For the intellect, it all comes down to a choice, all we can do is show that Faith is a fully logical choice.

To remove obstacles for Athiest, one must explain how reason alone is limited and can not explain reality, that Faith is reasonable and thus completes reason, that Catholic Christianity is the most logical faith, and that God continues to act in our world through Miracles that have been scientifically validated as such (ie: Eucharistic miracles).

So, the union of Faith and Reason, God the source of the Big bang, and God’s pressence through miracles (valid ones, not here say), and the problem of Evil. Pray the Holy Spirit offers the gift of Faith, and the rest is up to the athiest to “choose” to accept.

Abiogenesis was something that only had to happen once in a 100-200 million year time window. I doubt that we’d observe it happening in a, what, 40 year window?

Speciation of large animals is another thing that probably would not occur within the last few decades. It’s a cumulative process, taking tens of millions of years (unless we have drastic environmental changes, and even then, it should take a few thousand at least).

Please re-read my last post. I have asked a number of atheists to provide this information and some have done so, and in every case the scientist denies reporting observed speciation, e.g. Italian wall lizard, elephant species, koala species. But to make it easier I am asking for observed speciation of single celled species.

Oh, well I don’t know of any that have been directly observed.

…How does one establish the accreditation of an “accredited witness” btw?
This is what the apostolic succession is all about. Jesus Christ personally chose 12 men as apostles. The word means one who is sent out with a message…like an emissary. In relations between states, people don’t appoint themselves to this position. They are appointed by the head of state, and speak on behalf of the head of state. It’s an official position.

By God’s very nature, He cannot be subject to empirical evidence, since He cannot be observed.
Universal gravitation is invisible, too, but that hasn’t stopped us from nailing it down fairly well. What’s so special about God that he is invulnerable to science and reason?

Oh, really?

So I should just believe anyone who turns up and claims to be appointed by God? Or who has been appointed by any organisation that claims to have been appointed by God?

Thanks, that makes it a lot simpler.

Not so. What convinces me of God are the hundreds of detailed messianic prophecies made hundreds of years before Jesus’ birth and recorded as fulfilled by credible eyewitnesses. If interested, I can give you a list.

I’d be interested in that.

Actually, I don’t even need all of that. What I would like to see is one messianic prophesy that states, “I will send my only Son, begotten and one in being with Me, who will come and spread a new covenant with the people of Israel. Yet, my chosen people will reject Him, and hand Him over to our enemies to be crucified. He will die, and on the third day will rise again. He will then leave for thousands of year until he will return to judge the living and the dead.”

Perhaps if there were other things written about how he would raise the dead to life, give the blind sight, and establish a new Church which had no connection to the priests or the temple.

If you could find something specific like that, it would definitely grab my attention. Oh, and if said passage were to indicate that it was a messianic prophesy, that would also be helpful. We all know that you can find prophetic statements in any sufficiently long text, so it is important to establish that it was written and intended to be taken as a prophesy of Jesus.

If could point me to ***that ***passage, or those passages, it would be great.
