Or at least a conservative or orthodox Novus Ordo to go to?

Taking a little trip to SF in April or May, and I’m wondering if anyone knows where there is a good Mass and an adoration chapel. Scouting these out ahead of time always makes the trip more worthwhile, and helps me to decide where to stay.

PG,

I don’t know about a TLM in San Francisco; perhaps somebody else has some info. You might want to consider at least visiting Our Lady of Fatima Byzantine Catholic parish. See:

Quite a number of people from San Francisco attend the TLM at St. Margaret Mary Church in Oakland every Sunday. The Church is just off the freeeway, and is very easy to get to from San Francisco, either by car or by BART.

For current info on the TLM, including schedules and events, check the Oakland homepage on the Institute of Christ the King website: institute-christ-king.org/oaklandhome.htm

For driving directions to St. Margaret Mary Church, check the church’s website: stmargmaryoak.org/

No.

That’s a tough one. SS Peter and Paul in North Beach was considered very orthodox when Fr. Malloy was pastor there. Not sure how things are since he was retired.

The TLM remains verboten in S.F. pending the new “norms” that go into effect on January 8.

Whether any priest or parish will attempt to overcome these restrictions and start a TLM in San Francisco is unclear at this point.

Are you coming to see me, PG!!! Whoo hooo!!!

There might very well be a TLM coming to SF. I know some people who are working on it right now. That said, St.MM’s can actually be less driving time than some of the parishes in SF depending on where you are staying. You can have your choice of a very reverent NO or a TLM. You can also take BART if you have no transportation and I can give you a lift! If you’ll be there on the third Sunday, you can hear my kids sing in the choir!

I would make it a point to visit this Church for Divine Liturgy if I were going to SF. I have never been there and know very little about it but I believe there are only something like 3 Russian Catholic parishes in the U.S. For most people this would be a once in a lifetime opportunity.

Thanks everyone for all the links. I hope to check them out tonight. Life has been pretty busy lately…

jj - do you go there for Mass? I’ve never been to a Byzantine Church. Thanks for the link.

Thanks AF. I would absolutely love to attend an ICRSS Mass!

There is a good examination of conscience on that website. They ask if you go to Holy Communion out of habit or out of respect. 🙂

I live in southern California, PG; I posted that because I couldn’t think of a TLM until your ICK “Oakland option” was mentioned.

This is a great place to visit and say some prayers for the conversion of Russia. It’s also a great place to see what Russia would look like if the consecration (requested at Tuy) were done, because the conversion of Russia means that this country would become Byzantine Catholic.

The Byzantine Rite, or Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom, is the most common rite in the Christian East. Although I’m not happy with some new translations in certain jurisdictions, it’s still usually done in a reverent manner, especially compared to what you’re used to seeing. I’ll post a link to the text if you like.

The last page of it has a brief outline of how a Confession goes. It suggests that after the “Bless me father” one give one’s sex, marital status, state in life, perhaps age.

I have never heard of this… has anyone else?

(I have been asked about my age and marital status once, following which the priest asked me if I had considered a religious vocation, but I had never heard that one ought to state them upon entering the confessional…)

I missed that part, but it probably helps to give the priest a better idea of what to say when he gives you spiritual advice. His advice would change according to your state in life, I would think.

It sounds like they are going to try to get a TLM in Marin, but its probably not going to happen in SF. Apparently several priests became interested in doing it, but somebody in administrative authority discouraged priests from saying it in SF.

Interesting. What parish in Marin? And where did you hear this?

Sad to say there will probably not be a Traditional Mass celebrated in San Francisco in the near and even not so near future. The Archbishop has issued some pretty strict rules concerning implementation of the Rite.

So is he overriding the pope, then?

So is he overriding the pope, then?
Yeah, pretty much…

Of course, he tries to find ways to justify his refusal to obey…saying that there are these “norms” that will be in effect that have to be met in order to have a TLM there.
