Any young earth creationists out there?

One would hope that your source of information would not be a group whose theology is in opposition to the Catholic Church. From AiG’s “Statement of Faith”:
  • The 66 books of the Bible are the written Word of God.
  • The final guide to the interpretation of Scripture is Scripture itself
  • Salvation is a gift received by faith alone in Christ alone

Have you actually read the article? It only talks about the Early Church Fathers.

This may come as a shock, but we do have slightly more scientific data than the early church fathers

Surprised no one has raised this yet- one of the scientists who helped develop the Big Bang theory was Georges Lemaître, a catholic priest.
Georges Lemaître was a curious but significant example of supreme irrationality at work. He literally, I think, firmly believed in two completely opposite things, which he never allowed to compete. He even resented Pope Pius XII’s attempt to reconcile Genesis with the Big Bang, and persuaded him not to do so, at least in public.

I believe that the currently-available evidence points to the universe being ~13 billion years old, and the Earth being ~3 billion years old.

I don’t believe that conflicts with faith, as God is not limited in His ability to work by time.

The ECF’s were limited in their understanding by the knowledge that was available to them at the time. We can’t fault them for that.

Simon Singh’s Book ‘The Big Bang’ gives some background to this. Lemaître didn’t want the Church to look stupid if the big bang theory was proved incorrect. At the time the completing steady state theory covered the same evidence just as well as the big bang and could have won out (spoiler- it didn’t). Scientists at the time used the Pope’s endorsement as a reason to discredit the theory- they remembered the Pope forcing Galileo to recant his theory that the Earth went around the Sun.

I find it ridiculous to take almost everything in the bible as literal when much of it is blatantly figurative, as a spiritual teaching tool.

I think the family tree as described is meant to indicate our long line of connection with Adam and Eve, not serve as a genealogical fact source. I feel the same when it comes to bible discussions of astrophysics. The OT was written to instruct a people that were much more quantitatively and scientifically primitive, on spiritual matters.

One must always remember the intended purpose of the bible books - spiritual guidance.

Radio carbon dating says some are millions of years old.

It does, quite so. And your point was that you followed the early church fathers in their thinking, based on your words: “Pretty much all the Church Fathers and Doctors were unanimous in believing that Genesis 1-11 was a literal historical account of creation” and “Whenever the Church Fathers unanimously agree on something, it is considered authoritative.”

So, looking at the article you asked us to, there are eight church fathers quoted, split exactly 50/50 between instantaneous creation of everything at once, and six-day literalism. Which version are you?

Has anyone mentioned the fact that the Sun was not created until the fourth ‘day’? So, how long were those first three days? Certainly not 24-hour, Earth-revolving-around-the-Sun days!

The six-day one.

The point is, none of them taught 13.7 billion years.

This means I believe the Earth and Universe are around the age that scientists say they are, but that God intervened and created all that exists, seen and unseen, and man was created by God, not evolved.
I’m personally somewhere in between being an Old Earth Creationist and Theistic Evolutionist, with a dash of Intelligent Design thrown in.

I believe the Universe and Earth are 13.8/4.54 billion years old.
I believe the universe and life have evolved.
I believe God created the initial life which evolved on Earth.
I believe God created Adam and Eve between 6-10,000 years ago and all modern humans are descended from them.
I believe there are plenty of signs and reasons to believe an intelligent designer was involved in the creation of our world.

Why couldn’t God create the universe in six days but over billions of years it changed
