Anybody Else Here Like Joyce Meyer Too?

Isn’t that what neo-pagan new agers teach also? LOL!
I think there is a balance, and many people get out of balance in both directions. Just from a psychological point of view, positive attitudes can and do effect how you live your life and the choices you make. They don’t change the future in a magical way, but effect the way you deal with life and the problems and choices that you are presented in life.

And the way you speak about yourself and others absolutely effects your attitude and outlook. So in this way, she is right, but has not always presented it in this fashion, she believes it’s more spiritual than psychological. And how these two relate to each other I’m not sure any of us even know the answers to that at this point. If you read John Paul II’s writings, you begin to understand how complex, beautiful and integrated we are as humans in the physical, emotional and spiritual.

Likewise, negative attitudes effect us and our choices and sometimes the outcome of our overall life experiences. Joyce has tapped into this as do many others, and if you listen with the “psychological” reasoning in mind, you shouldn’t have problems getting into spiritual error. I do understand that these teachers sometimes take this to extreme, and like I said, balance is key in anything you do, think and believe.

There are some Catholic teachers, speakers…that could be seen and taken as extreme if people are not discerning, maybe not in this area, but I have seen people get extreme by taking teachings out of context.

As a side note: I do know that Joyce Myers is not who she used to be. We all grow. She has grown a lot over the years, and she doesn’t teach the same things in the same way that she did in her early years. We need to be charitable in the way we see and understand people in their journey, they respond to the light they are given.

And be careful about people who are hysterical in their analysis of her, some of these same people are hysterical in their analysis of the Catholic Church also, they are not so kind or correct in the way they present their arguments. They have a tendency to take things out of context or twist them to seem to be what they are not.

JMHO 🤷

Wow, just found this thread. I’m a guilty JM fan, have to admit. Yes, her theology is often lacking… but she never claims to be a University taught theologian. As such, her theology is slowly evolving. I can see a definite difference. I’m also reading comments on this thread from folks who clearly haven’t heard or read more than a few snippets from Joyce, and often from her earlier years which she herself admits were lacking. That said, it is perhaps not a bad thing to stick to Catholic writers and speakers, especially if you are weak in the faith.

The strict Evangelical Charismatic movement doesn’t like her because, and get this, her theology shows the effects of having studied Catholic writers as well as the bible, including a Catholic mystic (that REALLY riled them up).

The book I’m reading now, she actually goes into how she relied too much on her own faith (believing in God, speaking of what you want in faith, etc.) and that she has come to the revelation that it is grace that is the important thing – faith is only a channel, and God being all Great doesn’t even require THAT if he wants to give gifts. I was reading this and thinking, uh oh Joyce, watch out, your dipping your toes in the Tiber.

I think Joyce is a committed Christian, albeit not a highly educated one, and she has the guts to just step out there and speak from the heart. You get the good and the bad. But she is earthy and funny and highly motivational.

I pray for Joyce’s conversion to Catholicism 'cause I think she would be one rocking Roman Catholic! Personally, I love to read Johnette, but her smile and voice on TV just grate on me. Its not her – its me. But Joyce, I really resonate to her style.

I am glad some people got something out of listening to her, and came back to the Church.

I am, a bit concerned that this will not be the result for everyone who has drifted away from the Church.

I dont know much about her even after reading each post in this very long thread.

All I can say, is life is not a sprinkling of scripture here and there to make you feel good. Especially when, (and I have not seen her in “action”) there is the risk she doesnt really know the scriptures that well to begin with.

That does not characterize her at all. Rather than believe what others say, why not just tune in and listen for yourself. Really, you’re not going to hell just because you listen to a program by a non-Catholic preacher.

I’m curious which book you are reading.

Thanks,

I am not in fear of going to Hell by listening to her or anyone else for that matter.

I only pointed out that while some here came back to the Church after being promted by her that does not mean all lapsed catholics listening to her will.

That does not mean that one can not like her, or should not like her.

I just dont think what works for one person to come back will work for another.

Point well-taken. However, I get the impression that some of the more OCD-type Catholics here would be concerned they would have to go to confession if they listened to Joyce’s program one time. What really bugs me is people making judgments when they haven’t seen it for themselves.

Bucky24

i’m not sure what OCD catholic means, but i don’t go to confession after listening to protestants. i was on a newsletter mailing list from a Church of Christ preacher, until he started talking about catholics, the Pope, and baptism, because a lot of what he said was true and honest. i, however, don’t see much in joyce meyer.

It’s not a matter of “going to hell just because you listen to a program by a non-Catholic preacher”… It’s a matter of choosing NOT to listen to someone who holds heretical viewpoints and teaches them to people who sadly buy into it. It’s about the fact that many people aren’t strong enough in their faith to be able to discern between the truth and falsehood that comes out of her mouth… and I’m sure there IS some truth to what she says, but the errors could be costly.

There are plenty of other Protestants one can listen to who are not so “off” in their teaching. When Catholics AND Protestants alike are finding something wrong with this woman’s teaching, I think it’s a good idea to take heed… or at the very least, to be very cautious.

Well, the protestants have a problem with her because she is a little bit on the charismatic side of evangelicalism.
She doesn’t roll around on the floor or oink like a pig,
but she had a powerful experience of grace many years ago,
and when she made the mistake of telling people about it,
her stoic Baptist congregation told her she wasn’t welcome anymore. That’s not a Christian thing to do.
I had a powerful experience from God while I was still a JW,
and when I told a few close JW friends about it, they started sternly warning me that my experience was from the Devil
(( because I had received a burning desire to be in heaven with Jesus and I was born WAAAAAAY AFTER 1935 )).

Joyce is a big help to me motivationally, and I can relate to a lot of what she has experienced in life. Her scriptural teachings on motivation are generally excellent. Like I’ve said before, she is not Catholic (YET), so I obviously have some disagreements with her. Heck, I have disagreements with Billy Graham too, but I still like the man.

I know this: I sent Joyce a copy of CATHOLIC FOR A REASON III: SCRIPTURE AND THE MYSTERY OF THE MASS as a gift,
and she sent me back the kindest thank-you letter, personal, from her and her husband Dave. (( It was NOT a "form letter )). I have sent that book to many protestants. The only two who have bothered to send me a personal thank you letter were Joyce Meyer and Paul Crouch.
I care for these peoples’ souls and I want them Catholic in the end.

If I’m not mistaken, the JWs have at least one so-called annointed class person on the governing body who was also born after the 1935 cut-off date.

I think you are correct, but I’ll have to double check on that.
I have also heard that they have one or two NON-anointed on the GB now, too.

You see, the “anointed” people are spread all over the globe,
and when the Society wants to appoint someone to the GB,
they tend to want to appoint an Organization Man with
a LOT of work experience at BETHEL, preferably a long-time
resident of Bethel (their headquarters in Brookllyn, NY).

Have you sent this book to the JW headquarters?

I know, they would not even open it, and they would consider it evil because its Catholic, the most evil of all of Christendom. 🙂

Hi Hellisreal,
no I haven’t sent any Catholic literature to WTS Headquarters in Brooklyn. I am fairly confident that they would immediately put it in the “circular file.”

Okay, she’s not a Catholic and I AM a Catholic,
but I gotta tell you, I thoroughly enjoy watching Joyce Meyer’s
Enjoying Everyday Life program.

With wit and humor and a bit of self-deprecation, this woman
delivers a daily dose of practical biblical wisdom for daily living.
Sometimes she even causes me to bust out laughing.

I really like Joyce Meyer.
Is anybody else here a fan of hers?

God bless,

I like Joyce Meyer and her books and I like Joel Osteen even more, hes fantastic.

I wouldn’t consider Joel Osteen a Theologian by any stretch.

He basically believes in being born again
and then more or less positive thinking.

I can’t watch his show though, because I find it too much fluff,
plus he has that breathy voice and always smiles even if the topic is something negative. It’s just his “way,” but I find it
annoying.

I’ll give him this: I saw an extended interview of Joel Osteen about a month ago, he and his wife, and
he is one heck of a NICE guy.

But I don’t watch him.

Joyce Meyer does nothing for me–bad theology and it always seems like she is yelling and angry. 🤷

I recommend listening to her TV program this morning. I think today’s program illustrates very well how she has helped many of us who have delt with abuse and rejection from our childhood.

joycemeyer.com/OurMinistries/Podcasts/podcastdownloads.htm

Again, if anyone knows of Catholic programming or other resources that deal with these issues, please let us know. Several have recommended shows on EWTN. So far I have not seen anything that on EWTN that deals with the issues abuse and rejection. I’m not able to tune in all day long. Is there a particular program there that you would recommend? So far, Mother Angelica and Johnnette Benkovic’s programs have not been helpful at all with this issue for me.

All of the best theology in world is not helpful if your heart is closed off due to the pain you’ve experienced over a lifetime. Of course I would prefer Catholic resources to help with these issues. I just have not found any. For the past year I’ve relied on Joyce’s program to supplement other things (Catholic and other) that I have been reading.

Several have expressed a concern that her teaching would draw you away from the Catholic church. Speaking for myself, it’s had the opposite effect. If I did not get out of the funk I was in, my marriage would have ended and I would have likely dropped away from the church altogether.

Not that I am a big fan of Joyce Meyers…but one comment…

The “Protestants” that are the most critical of her teaching also tend to be those who are the most critical of Catholicism. Just saying…
