Anybody Else Here Like Joyce Meyer Too?

I
Several have expressed a concern that her teaching would draw you away from the Catholic church. Speaking for myself, it’s had the opposite effect.
I am happy that she helped you. But speaking for myself, I am not able to listen to anything she says because she mixes truth with lies–and that is a trick of the evil one.

“I’m going to tell you something folks, I didn’t stop sinning until I finally got it through my thick head I wasn’t a sinner anymore. And the religious world thinks that’s heresy and they want to hang you for it. But the Bible says that I’m righteous and I can’t be righteous and be a sinner at the same time.”

“Now whether you like it or not, whether you want to admit it or not, whether you want to operate on it or not, you are made the righteousness of God in Jesus Christ. Most people who go to denominational churches never ever hear that! They never hear it! Never! All I was ever taught to say was, ‘I’m a poor, miserable sinner.’ I am not poor, I am not miserable and I am not a sinner. That is a lie from the pit of hell. That is what I was and if I still am then Jesus died in vain. Amen?” (Joyce Meyer, “What Happened from the Cross to The Throne?” audio)

You are referring to something that she said years ago - a teaching that she has moved away from. She has admitted several times of mistakes that she made early in her ministry.

That being said, I’m not here trying to defend her theology. I am only saying that she has helped me in a profound way. A way that has not drawn me away from the Catholic church - but MUCH closer. I owe her a debt of gratitude.

I’ve been helped in a way that the Catholic church has not even come close to helping me. Our church needs to do a better job of helping those who are hurting from abuse and rejection to understand that they don’t have to remain there.

I’m curious which book you are reading.

Thanks,

If Not for the Grace of God*, 1995.

I only read about a page or two a night in bed, and then it sparks something and I grab my Bible, and then I’m off an running in lecto divino-world until I fall off to sleep. So I’m not too far in her book. And yes, sometimes she sets me thinking 'cause she’s got it a bit wrong… but sometimes she she sets me thinking about how scripture has something to say about everyday life and I’m off to discover some of that for myself.

Wouldn’t replace our family rosary, reading scripture or even the CCC, but I do admit to a bit of guilty indulgence in Joyce for a few minutes about 5 days a week.

Here’s a quote I like:

It may sound ridiculous, but when I was so frustrated and confused about trying to change myself, it never occurred to me to ask the Lord to change me – and then leave it to Him.

Not rocket science, not heavy theology, but something that resonates with a lot of us.

Not that I am a big fan of Joyce Meyers…but one comment…

The “Protestants” that are the most critical of her teaching also tend to be those who are the most critical of Catholicism. Just saying…
I was going to bring that up, Hank Hennegraf, who was quoted earlier as having very stern warnings about Meyers has absolutely nothing good to say about the Catholic Church. As a matter of fact, he has very little good to say about much of anyone. I used to listen to him all the time before I became a Catholic, the only person or organization he hasn’t criticized much is himself and his own. 🤷 Same with most Fundamentalists, who HATE Meyers and the Church, equally. We have more in common with her than with them. 😉

All I know is that God uses those who will be used. Joyce’s heart is one that is in love with Christ, and He will see to it that she makes it, no matter how long it takes, because that’s what she wants also, she just hasn’t found her way completely home yet. All we can do is pray for her and love her, as we are called to do.

I know that’s a stretch for some…😊

seems to me that if you are teaching one thing and then “move away” from it later, you shouldn’t be teaching at all since it could cost peoples souls. just sayin’…

Auriel here, not a catholic. On the very honest but perhaps shallow answer side I cannot listen to her, her voice really grates on my nerves. Not joking, I mean seriously grates…Like fingernails going down a chalkboard! I would rather watch a Marathon of The Nanny! Now as far as her no nonsense style I can see why some would admire here.

I noted a few mentioned the Word of Faith connections, that would be my biggest complaint. I care not for name it and claim it crowds. Too many people have gone broke. lost their faith or both over these things.

I know some are critical of her for all the plastic surgery, but I do not see that as a big deal. Its just a step above dying ones hair or any other cosmetic procedure.

Her organization takes in roughly 95 million year, being that she is a successful writer one can see why. She has had quite a few disagreements, (don’t we all) with the IRS, she says she is a religious organization, they have said before that she is a business. She does have a 501c3 status. I do not trust anyone with that status because of all the legal implications that you are separate yet approved governmentally. It is becoming a slippery slope, several ministers has been jailed or fined because of this. One cannot endorse certain political candidates, appose policies, etc…God’s words, not government should be heard from the pulpit.

The Supreme Court had this to say about a 501c3 status:
The Court asserts that an exempt organization must “demonstrably serve and be in harmony with the public interest,” must have a purpose that comports with “the common community conscience,” and must not act in a manner “affirmatively at odds with [the] declared position of the whole Government.” Taken together, these passages suggest that the primary function of a tax-exempt organization is to act on behalf of the Government in carrying out governmentally approved policies.

95 million a year?

We are all in the wrong business people.
Oops, sorry, that was back in 2003. I believe last year it was closer to the 100 million mark. Part of that is royalties from the 70+ books she has written…

Unbelieveable. I had no idea there was so much disposable income out there for this market!

And to think the OP SENT HER A FREE COPY…

Granted, if it helps her its worth it…

I wonder how many other people who dig her send her free stuff all day…

**Granted, if it helps her its worth it…

I doubt if more than a few CATHOLICS bother to send
her ANY apologetics material.
We criticize her errors, but few do anything to try
and help enlighten her.

As for her $100 million income,
her ministry is a vast organization with a huge staff
of employees and multiple large charities up and running in various countries feeding and clothing the poor,
so I doubt that Joyce herself sees the vast majority of
that $100 million (of course, I don’t believe she is “hurting” financially either by a long shot, of course). My point is
most of that $100 million goes to staff salaries, attorneys (to keep the IRS wolves at bay), charities, etc etc etc.

When I was a Christian, I enjoyed watching her. In fact, I wanted to attend her teaching school. If I remember correctly she had or still has one.

Zahava,

Are you not (or no longer?) a Christian? I read your siggy… are you Jewish?

I don’t spend as much time on the board as I’d like, so I don’t really know lots of people.

Just curious 'cause I’m a Jew who converted to Catholicism.

Yes, I am an Orthodox Jew. My story is on my blog. What’s your story?

Same here. I’ve tried to watch her several times because theology aside, I’ve heard she could be a good motivational speaker. But honestly, I just can’t stand more than 15-30 seconds of her.

Plus, and this is really shallow - her clothes, shoes, jewelery, *even the flowers on her stage *are always completely and totally PERFECTLY color coordinated - to the point where I wonder if she digitizes the color she wants and has everything hand-made and hand-dyed - even the flowers! It’s almost comical. Shallow, I know.

I loved watching her everyday on GodTV here in Sweden… up until last Fall when Catholics on the Catholic Community Yahoogroup told me to not have GodTV or watch JM because it’s all protestant and goes against CC. I was so sad to have to stop watching JM and give a book (I read it already, the diet one) away to my Aunt who told me about JM a few years ago.

Now I really want to get back to watching her. Even as a devout Catholic. She was awesome!
Okay, she’s not a Catholic and I AM a Catholic,
but I gotta tell you, I thoroughly enjoy watching Joyce Meyer’s
Enjoying Everyday Life program.

With wit and humor and a bit of self-deprecation, this woman
delivers a daily dose of practical biblical wisdom for daily living.
Sometimes she even causes me to bust out laughing.

I really like Joyce Meyer.
Is anybody else here a fan of hers?

God bless,

Same here!!!
Not exactly on the ball theologically speaking, but she certainly got me excited again about Christianity and, indirectly speaking, back into the Catholic Church - should write and thank her for that 👍 😃

Televangelist Paula White has that effect on me.
So does T.D. Jakes - WHY O WHY do so MANY
African-American preachers think they have to scream and yell, jump up and down, kick their feet and talk in silly rhymes??
For my part, I can’t learn ANYTHING from someone
who behaves like that when they are teaching, absolutely nothing.

Then there’s Kenneth Copeland with those scary eyes and that twang and his constant condemning of “religion” and his silly belief that Jesus burned in hell for 3 days and nights.

I wish to heaven that my cable company would carry EWTN.
I’d still watch Joyce Meyer’s program, but everything else
would be EWTN.
