Yes, but so many martyrs in Rome died just to not put some incense in a spot, as in just the act.
Many in Rome viewed it as just the duty of a Roman citizen, regardless of how much they didn’t believe in the deity.
But the Christians died to not put any incense anywhere. In fact, at least one had his hand filled with incense and put inside fire so as to make him quiver and drop the incense, but he did not budge.
This just makes me feel really uneasy about even doing exercises like this.

I appreciate your position and line of thinking Kei. And fortunately no one’s forcing us into downward dog!

No,it isn t unpopular. It is respectful.
That is why the name " yoga" for what most of us do or have done might be called " xx" or taken from the exercise practiced .
It takes a lifetime to become a Catholic and we do not " finish"…and we say we are Catholic.
I imagine that those who practice yoga within their spirituality or religion must cringe when they see us because honestly a big bunch couldn t care less what is behind it to absorb it. At all but exercising.
But " yoga" or " xx exercises" may be just exercises,we westernized their " gym".
So,with all respect and without meaning to offend people who may have yoga as part of their religion or spirituality,we appreciate we could " borrow" the exercises that have helped us in one way or another.
We really should call it xx but then we would have a " patent and copyright" problem 😳

I believe that’s incorrect. Using it as a spiritual practice would be wrong; the poses themselves are neutral.

That’s a Hindu spiritual discipline.

Many Hindus are offended that Americans do it secularly.

When I stream Youtube videos on my TV, the spiritual aspect tends to be pretty uncommon, or the person uses extremely broad concepts, like inner focus, peace, acceptance, etc. I don’t find myself feeling uncomfortable about it.

I think most Westerners approach it for well-being. It slows you down, helps you become aware, and it’s good for a culture that does a lot of sitting. My experience, and my wife’s, mirror your own. Most people are doing it because they know it’s good to stretch and it’s good to try to step out of our fast-paced lives. They aren’t interested in deep spiritual truth, they want to look and feel better.

I smoke a pipe for the same reason people do yoga- it relaxes me and gives me time in my otherwise busy schedule to slow down.

I do like the postures more than conventional stretching. Yoga has an artform to it that is aesthetically pleasing. It feels different.

I wish I would do it more. I always say I will but never get around to it. I do just stretch my legs and back all the time. In fact stretching my legs eliminates restless leg syndrome. If I ever retire I hope to be more committed to it. I do make prayer out of it. Offering my efforts.

My wife and I are members of a hot yoga studio and take classes several times a week. We have for years. All the teachers are Americans and the classes are purely secular. But it is a great workout and it has many health and psychological benefits. The heat in the studio allows you to get deeper into the poses without injury.

Saying Catholics can’t practice yoga is like saying they can’t compete in the Olympics, because The Games were dedicated to the Greek god Zeus. The medals given out since 1928 have the imprint of Nike, goddess of victory. Also Catholics could not practice martial arts because of its roots in Hinduism, Buddhism, Shinto, etc. Not to mention that a lot of the sports we play were invented and/or popularized by protestants!

To the OP’s point about Downward Dog: Your heels touching is not the key to the pose. There are about ten keys to that pose that have to do with alignment and where the tension and relaxation is. The heels should be pressing toward the mat, but it’s OK if they never get there. You are getting the benefits of the pose anyway.

And don’t fret about the “contortionists” in yoga. The great thing about the practice is the less flexible, the less strong and the less balanced you are, the more benefit you are getting out of it. The contortionists are sort of “cheating” and should be doing more complicated poses that challenge them as much as the basic poses challenge you. It is not a contest.

Good you stopped, yoga begins with worship of sun god .Its breaking of the First Commandment ,which means 4 generation down the line has to bear the punishment.risking you soul!

Deuteronomy 4:19 And when you look up to the heavens and see the sun, the moon, and the stars, all the host of heaven, do not be led astray and bow down to them and serve them, things that the Lord your God has allotted to all the peoples everywhere under heaven.

The answer is a bit more nuanced than one might think. Catholics should not participate in any of the “spiritual” aspects associated with yoga, but technically can do the actual physical exercises. However, many people who practice yoga caution that it is often difficult, if not impossible, to separate the exercises from the meditations.

But its roots in eastern religions concerned local Catholic leaders.
“It is a mind and body practice developed under Hinduism, the goal of which is spiritual purification that will lead to a higher level of understanding and eventually union with the divine,” said Rev John Riley, chancellor for the Archdiocese of Kansas City, to the Wichita Eagle.
“It is for these reasons that Catholics are alerted to the dangers of the practice of yoga and are encouraged to look for other exercise alternatives that do not incorporate a spiritual dimension.”

The Truth About Yoga
Watch as I expose the satanic deception behind Yoga. Many think it is a harmless form of stretching and exercise. It is anything but that, Yoga is in fact a form of Hindu worship and it is an open door to demons. Yoga is meant to awaken the Kundalini spirit within the individual, a snake spirit said to be coiled around the base of the spine. Once awakened through Yoga stretches, it is said to travel up the spine to the brain and open the 3rd eye, or pineal gland of the individual, which is an occult satanic term used to refer to spiritual vision. Yoga stretches are also pulled right out of the Hindu Vedas (scriptures).

It’s not the tiniest bit difficult to separate the exercises from the meditations.

I would like to do that, but can’t find it in this country and the dvd’s are so very expensive. Do you know if there is any online courses or books on it?

I’ve found the SoulCore digital downloads to be affordable

https://shop.soulcore.com/digital-downloads.html

This is a group called “Rosary Workout” who puts their videos up on YouTube

Pietra Fitness has affordable downloads https://pietrafitness.com/store/

Another thought, you might reach out to the companies and see if they have any special for a parish who wants to start a class. You cannot be the only person at your parish who would enjoy this. Maybe God is calling you to start a class 🙂

Do you actually believe you can “worship” something without knowing it? How do you define “worship”?

1 : to honor or reverence as a divine being or supernatural power

2 : to regard with great or extravagant respect, honor, or devotion a celebrity worshipped by her fans
I know that saints have died a martyrs death before they would simply burn a bit of incense. I mean, it is only incense, we Catholics burn incense, so it would have been so easy to justify it “I know that I am burning this incense to God and not to this false deity”. The Book of Saints - Saint Augustine's Abbey, Aeterna Press - Google Books

Or eat a bit of pork, one tiny taste - surly a mom would encourage her precious son to just eat one nibble of the pork, but, instead the mother and brothers encouraged each other in martyrdom http://www.usccb.org/bible/2mc/7
