Some of the anachronistic opinions expressed on this thread make me ashamed to be a Catholic. On this thread, I see bigotry, xenophobia, ignorance and superstition proffered in the name of Our Holy Church. I hope that is not what we are about.

Can someone please find something wrong with treadmill exercise, so I have a reasonable claim to be a couch potatoe?

Otherwise I’ll go get on it again.

This is what Pope Benedict XVI has said on Yoga, and I think it is very good to consider. It was never officially translated into English and this is an amateur translation. Below is an excerpt from this web page and interview… There is other edifying content on yoga found in the interview, but I have copied only a portion…

Do you think there is a background link, even though not so apparent, between the diffusion of eastern religions and the reappearance of occultism?

Without doubt this is present deep down. Let us say that what these eastern religions offer move at different levels. There is a yoga which is reduced to a form of gymnastic. It offers some element which can be of help in relaxation of the body. If yoga is truly reduced to exercises it can be acceptable as long as the movements have an exclusively physical dimension. It has to be truly reduced to pure physical exercise for relaxation, free from any ideological element. On this point one has to be very attentive that a determined vision of man, of the world and the relation between God and man is not introduced to this physical exercise. This purification of a method which in itself is logical but contains ideas which are incompatible with the Christian life could be compared for example with the ‘demythification’ of the pagan traditions regarding the creation of the world found in the first chapter of Genesis, where the sun and moon, the great divinities of the myth are reduced to ‘lamps’ created by God, lamps reflecting the light of God, and help us imagine the True Light, which is the Creator of light. The same would also be true also in the case of yoga and other eastern techniques where a transformation and radical displacement is necessary which truly removes all ideological pretensions from it. The moment at which there appear elements attempting to lead towards ‘mystical’ they now evolve into instruments leading towards an erroneous direction.

You’re thinking of eliptical units. Treadmills are quite linear.

Well, Buddhists have made “Walking Meditation” popular. Be careful you do not just walk on your treadmill.

You think so, Miss EE, put a piece of duct tape on the belt and turn the machine on. 😛

Mine has two drums designed on it, much like the old reel to reel tapes, so technically it isn’t circular. OTOH, I have used duct tape to repair it, along with WD-40 to keep it running smooth.

You have well highlighted a very very real problem.

Careful with the wd40, it’s great for attracting dust! White lithium might be better suited for a treadmill.

No someone told me I couldn’t do it so I did it just to prove the concept.

I do try to say a Rosary while on it, though. Instead of running with beads, I did a little microprocessor thingy with a couple buttons and LEDs, though. My sister thinks I’m nuts.
