What kind of racial attacks? Actual violence, or people getting funny looks on the bus? I know of that website where you can report anything as a hate crime, no witnesses required, and this goes into statistics and the BBC triumphantly affirms that the UK is truly a horrible place.Granted, I came from a very racially divided town, but it makes me sick. The U.K. isn’t a hotbed of tolerance, we had a massive increase in racial attacks after Brexit.
.
A Polish family house getting burned down because they are Polish, Indians (as in people from India) getting beat up, anyone wearing a hijab being called a terrorist, etc. Several times I have been a witness to this. This isn’t the norm, but it happens more than it should. What kind of racial attacks? Actual violence, or people getting funny looks on the bus? It’s interesting that she thinks “others” on social media are being melodramatic when she herself is being overly emotional regarding the political differences between you.My half-brother’s wife, who I’ve always gotten along well with, has cut ties with me because I voted for a different candidate and commented that people on social media are being melodramatic. I’m shaking and in tears. I can’t believe this.
This is so well stated and we HAVE become enslaved by emotions and offense.AClaire11, this election has brought the loony out of almost everyone!! Social media is lit up with some of the most inane emo drivel I have ever seen. I have close relatives who have said their 2nd grade duaghters came home and asked if Trump was going to send her adopted sister from Central America (who has been here for years) back there. How does a 2nd grade even come to that conclusion unless her family is feeding her stuff a 2nd grader cannot grasp and 2) and stuff that is either total fabrication or a ridiculous exaggeration of reality. It is totally laughable and the only sane response is to laugh at it. My relative said she fought back tears trying to answer. Holy cow what have we come to?
I get the disappointment by Hillary supporters. I get the fear of a change of direction in many policies. And I get the absolute loathing of Trump and what he has said. But to now live in fear that racism and sexism is going to reign supreme is simply irrational.
My daughter summed it up nicely, “Everybody is like, “I’m so scared and afraid.” Trump is just one person, all of American is not just going to suddenly turn against you. This is why we have a system of checks and balances. Trump doesn’t hold all the power—yeesh, so much overreacting.”
I think we have become a nation that is become enslaved by our emotions. We are offended by everything, we value self esteem above all, trophies for simply showing up. I think we have become ill-equipped to deal with things rationally.
I didn’t word that clearly enough. She took umbrage when I commented that people were overreacting. I’ll have to think of a good way to reach out. This week has been crazy. My former RA, who I used to look up to, was victim blaming Trump supporters that were assaulted, and others were accusing Trump supporters of being morons and deliberately victimizing others by their votes. It’s interesting that she thinks “others” on social media are being melodramatic when she herself is being overly emotional regarding the political differences between you.
I agree with the post I can’t find now that said ( I think) to give it some time and reach out with some gesture and then and see what happens since you have a history of getting along. I hope she will come to grips with what many are experiencing in high emotion after the election and be warm to your gesture.
If not, then of course move on.
Sorry to hear of this.
Well sated!~ I hope too we can work together to build up rather than tear down.I didn’t word that clearly enough. She took umbrage when I commented that people were overreacting. I am disgusted by any hate crimes occurring, but to act as if I’m at fault for the actions of bullies across the country is absurd.** I hope everyone calms down soon and that we can join together in working to build up our communities. That’s what will make America greater.**
If this is representative of the ND student body, my kid won’t be going there!I didn’t word that clearly enough. She took umbrage when I commented that people were overreacting. We’ve already decided that talk about politics shall be forbidden on Thanksgiving because:As in, I fear for Thanksgiving dinner, and I wish Thanksgiving wasn’t coming up because the level of disagreement and ill-will around the table could be terrible? Yes, absolutely. The mass hysteria around here ranks with the Salem witch trials, which were also popular nearby at one time.
Happy Birthday to you and may God Bless you for standing up for what you believe in.Thank you!
Making nice in spite of fundamental differences on values is overrated. My half-brother’s wife, who I’ve always gotten along well with, has cut ties with me because I voted for a different candidate and commented that people on social media are being melodramatic. I’m shaking and in tears. I can’t believe this.
Calling someone a terrorist without evidence is a false accusation and possibly slander/libel depending on the circumstances.A Polish family house getting burned down because they are Polish, Indians (as in people from India) getting beat up, anyone wearing a hijab being called a terrorist, etc. Several times I have been a witness to this. This isn’t the norm, but it happens more than it should.
I’m not denying that some reports might be false, but to say “there are no attacks at all, everyone just wants to be a victim” is wrong. I really doubt burned down their house to insult Britain. Someone hires an actor to yell “learn English you dirty Indian” on the bus just for fun.
