much better this time around… the consciously loud voices were not there… just the occasional natural slip from force of habit.

In our parish, the new translations seem to be going well. We hear the occasional, “And also… with your spirit” followed by a head smack and a “Arrgh!” 🙂

After we changed to the RDL a couple of years ago, the priest sat waiting, confused, after the congregation responded–waiting from habit for the rest of the response–which had been eliminated. 🙂

Give folks the benefit of the doubt; force of habit is powerful.

I had not attended mass at the OF parish since the new translation until this past Sunday. I go to a Latin parish most of the time out of preference but the other by necessity… (And Monseigneur Kavanaugh (sp) is one of my favorite priests)

I went to the OF parish with great expectations. I was looking forward to mass with the new translation. I had been hearing nothing but good things about it via the radio program here.

What I got was… rebellion…? My daughter and I were following the mass and when it got to any of the changed translations… most notably “…And with your Spirit.” , there was a very vocal group that said instead, “…and also with you.”

The first time or two, I thought… okay, they are not into the swing of things yet… but then as the mass continued, they would do this louder each time (including with the newly translated creed), trying to drown out the rest of us.

What the heck gives?

The largest shock, though, was at the end of mass, after Fr had already gone outside and we were streaming out… these folks that were scattered throughout the church started clapping and hooting…

Seriously… Wha?? I’m almost inclined to seek another Parish but I’m kind of stuck because of scheduling… I do hope this tapers off over time. What do the folks doing this think that they are accomplishing?
This is troubling, especially the “clapping and hooting.” Whatever their motives, I hope this doesn’t happen again. I will pray about this and hope it does taper off…very quickly.

In my parish the daily Massers are doing well on the whole and that has been a good surprise considering that the pastor and two associates offered no support and are not praying the new Eucharistic prayers themselves. I just attempted to start a new thread questioning the validity of the Mass or whether transubstantiation is taking place when the priest uses prayers reserved for children’s Masses. I think we have the makings of a real mess at our parish! Fortunately, the new associate pastor and a visiting priest who is here in Arizona from Spokane, are both praying from the new Roman Missal.

As I mentioned… my second experience at this parish was different from before. either they got a clue or is is a Roving Ring of Rebellious Rapscallions and they’ve moved on. 🙂

Ha - There is not a learning curve! This is not even a translation so much as minor corrections and amendments to a previous translation. The changes are all more accurate, more beautiful and more meaningful than the old (discarded) version. And all easy if anyone is half awake. So people willfully not cooperating with the wisdom and authority of Holy Mother Church clearly need to be brought up to speed. That’s not your job, but the priest’s.

You, but better yet (if possible) a small group must ask for a few minutes with the priest. Tell him simply what you told us, this was a shock, it created a feeling of rebellion that distracted from the Mass, it got louder as things progressed, causing a distraction and tense atmosphere, and glad-handing and cheers after Mass seem more suited to a victorious football team than Christians in worship. So would he please give counsel and instruction to those in the parish who are wayward or confused about their obligation to read the correct words exactly as they are in the Missal. (A priest was just fired for this you know, for not reading from HIS Missal.)

My parish did pretty well with the change, there are still some times when someone (myself included!) slips and says “and also with your spirit”. At a different church I went to, there was one response where people got confused and the majority responded “and also with you.” the priest paused and said “and with your spirit” loudly enough for everyone to to get back on track and repeat the response. That was helpful.

The crux of the matter is the cooperation of the pastor of a parish. Those priests who are in communion with Rome catechized those in opposition didn’t. Our pastor and the two retired priests refuse to use the new Roman Missal, the newly appointed assistant pastor does; so we have a one in four chance of having the Mass prayed as the teaching authority of the Church has instructed. Personally, I don’t get it. What good is going to come from this defiance? Those of us in the pews have almost entirely made the change, even if not perfectly. In six months, when 99% of the congregation are praying from the new Missal and the priest is not, other than confusion and the sense of willful disobedience on that priest’s part, what good comes from his actions? I guess there are more than a few priests who do not consider the authority of the Magisterium legitimate. What a mess.

My church installed an overhead just for this… and it doesn’t help. People are still stumbling and messing up (mainly because we had NO prep before hand. Just BAM!~ There you go, new translation, do eeeet!)
We have an overhead at our parish anyway…we have a sloped ceiling so it doesn’t overshadow anything. The new translations were up there for awhile and did really help…now that we mostly have it down…they are gone. Although once in awhile people slip up.
