When I got to the Sun. evening Mass (5:30 pm) no one was there and the doors were locked. Turns out it was canceled due to the Super Bowl (which doesn’t start until 6:30pm)!!!
I was sick last week, and must have missed the announcement.
Did this happen to anyone else? 🤷
I’m not a football fan, so I didn’t even get the connection at first.

Sorry that happened to you! 😦

Some years back, I remember the parish nearest to me cancelling their evening mass (or moving it way earlier) because of the Super Bowl. The details are a bit foggy to me now.

But the Broncos are playing tonight (right now) and my current parish didn’t change the schedule at all for the Super Bowl, and they didn’t change anything two years ago either.

I’m a Broncos fan, but seriously considered going to the evening mass at the cathedral Then I realized that I didn’t want to be anywhere near downtown near the end of the game.

They are playing the game in California, not in Denver, shouldn’t be caught in the crowd leaving the stadium.

It’s not the stadium crowd I’m worried about.

It’s the drunken fools that get behind the wheel after the game to drive home. And – if the Broncos win – there’s the danger of rioting like happened back in the 90s when fans came flooding out of bars and went nuts, turning over cars, lighting fires…

Yes.What is the Life Teen Mass was cancelled here in Denver due to the Super Bowl.
What I find interesting about this is the fact last week our Parahochial Vicar gave a homily based on putting God first. He expressed his disappointment re the fact that the week prior, only thee hundred attended Mass because of the playoffs…We are a parish od Four thousand registered families,so typically each Mass has approx.1300 attendees.

There will be massive crowds downtown Denver either celebrating or crying in their beer due to a loss.

I’m very sorry that happened to you. Praying you find it in your heart to forgive and pray for those who made that poor choice.
Praying for all those involved.

Yes. (i don’t attend the Sunday evening Mass). It has been in the announcements for weeks. But they also just started a Sunday evening Mass during Advent. I guess the Sunday evening Mass will be skipped twice a year, the super bowl and Easter.

That these two events are given equal consideration is of concern…

Our Mass wasn’t cancelled but there were a couple of squad cars having pulled cars off the roads on the way home. Lots and lots of parties and driving on side roads was indeed challenging.

Must have made up for last year when we had considerable snow on Super Sunday.

We had a beautiful evening Mass.
May God bless all who visit our thread.
Amen.

LOL, it did seem odd to see these two put together like that. I understand why it would be cancelled Easter Sunday, as Father will being doing crazy late and long services for Holy Week (and lots of confessions beforehand), and people either attend the vigil or a Easter morning Mass. As for the Super Bowl, I assumed it was because the Sunday evening Mass is not yet well attended, and they thought the Super bowl would take a large chunk of people out of the congregation, since the attendance seems to be younger people. Or because Father wants to watch the super bowl. 😉

Ah, so the cancellation was more of a traffic and safety consideration for churchgoers? Initially, I thought the priest and the town were huge fans! 😃

Nope, the 5:30 Mass wasn’t canceled here. There were only 10 cars or so and maybe 35 of us there. I am dreading Mass next week since we have two Broncos in the parish and we had Broncos banners on the bell tower a few years back. I’m hoping that it being Lent people will have a little decorum, but I doubt it.

The ball players may or may not be there.

Just because they play for the Bronco team doesn’t mean that Denver is their real home.

I lived next door to one of the Steelers for a while in the 90’s, he left for his real home in North Carolina once the season is over.

When I was a kid, Vern Law lived in my neighborhood—he and his family went back to Idaho once baseball was through for the year.

Neither of those men were Catholic, but the principle is the same, once the season is over the guys are anxious to get back to their homes.

One of them did pre-Cana here and I’ve seen him at Mass in the off season so he cosiders it home enough. Even at that I’m not concerned about the players, but the fans that will be sporting more bronco’s jerseys than normal. Just waiting for the pre-Mass high fives.

We have had Saturday night Mass and confessions cancelled because of the Kentucky Derby.
