Mama, on the other hand, is all “deer in the headlights” when I tell her we have to go to Confession.
I understand the feeling. I was well into adulthood before I could see it as something more than guilt, shame, doing what I HAD to do but to some degree feeling like I was going through the motions because God was basically a judging tyrant. What made all the difference was having a caring, compassionate spiritual director who could help me see that my relationship with God is based on love. He WANTS me to be free of these sinful burdens. He wants me to relate to him inn love. I look at things on a whole different way now.

I agree, with the caveate that their are times I do not look forward to going. Simply out of shame, not due to ever having had a bad experience. Always feel the way you express when I am finished, if not before.

I don’t have any experience with it, of course. If and when I decide to become Catholic it’s probably one of those things I would approach the absolute minimum number of times required.

I like it. We have great priests here who give good advice, and the relief I feel afterward doesn’t hurt either ☀️

If and when you do become Catholic, you might find yourself surprised at how often you go. I would say it’s the one sacrament where you truly feel different, in a better way, each and everyone, after your receive it. The Eucharist is certainly the center of our Christian lives, but it does not always give a person that special feeling. Is just psychological due to another person being so intimately involved on a person level? Perhaps, but never the less, the feeling is there.

If through the grace and mercy of God I get to Heaven, I want to thank Him for my salvation, my Catholic Faith, my Baptism and Chrismation, the innumerable times He has forgiven me in the Sacrament of Penance and given me Himself in Holy Communion…

I agree with you tafan2. @CelticWarlord I am also a convert and honestly I was terrified about confession. I felt that it would be awkward and embarrassing especially as it wasn’t something I’d grown up with and it can be. But generally the priest unpacks what you are saying and it’s more of a conversation. They don’t care what you say and it helps you examine what you need to do. Many many graces given thru this sacrament it’s amazing
