I used to think there was a problem in the Church of nullity decrees being handed out far too easily.
Over time, I came to realize that while the system isn’t perfect it isn’t fundamentally the problem. The problem is that we in the church don’t put even 5% of the effort into full, honest and, if necessary, brutal marriage preparation like we do into examining appeals for a nullity decree.
Maybe we should rotate tribunal members into the marriage prep programs and vice versa! Maybe some couples really should be told “Look, I have to be honest with you. You can dress up nice, rent a reception hall and say some pretty vows in front of me, but I already see barriers between you that are not going to allow this to be a sacramental marriage. Marriage is not externally imposed, it can only be given freely to each other. From what I see, this____ and this_____ in your relationship are barriers to you each truly giving yourselves to one another. Please resolve those problems first.”
