Waiting for a translation. EWTN went back to regular programming. So I will tune in again with the rebroadcast and see if there is any comment.

The American Papist is following the Pope’s trip to the Middle East, and here’s a link to the article on the incident yesterday. Apparently, after the sheikh’s tirade against Israel, Pope Benedict left the meeting before its official conclusion, only offering a distant and cold handshake to the speaker.
Following the diatribe and before the meeting was officially over, the pope exited the premises. Army Radio reported that the pope shook Tamimi’s hand before walking out.
Minutes after the embarrassing occurrence, Father Federico Lombardi, director of the Holy See press office, released a response to the incident.
“The intervention of Sheikh Tayseer Tamimi was not previewed by the organizers of the interreligious meeting that took place at Notre Dame Centre in Jerusalem,” the message read. “In a meeting dedicated to dialogue, this intervention was a direct negation of what [it] should be,” it continued.
“We hope that such an incident will not damage the mission of the Holy Father aiming at promoting peace and interreligious dialogue, as he has clearly affirmed in many occasions in this pilgrimage,” Father Lombardi added.
“We hope also that interreligious dialogue in the holy land will not be damaged by this incident,” the message concluded.

The Pope needs better experts on Middle Eastern communication. I believe that we understand what he is trying to say, but they don’t. On the flipside, the conservative Jewish faction needs to get past the fact that the Pope is German.

The news report I saw said the Pope pretty much walked out on the guy’s tirade. Good for him…Roanoker

I don’t like the fact that the media is saying that the Pope walked out. I think this is media political manipulation and it started with Jerusalem Post.

I thought about it. The fact is, the Sheikh interrupted the normal process of the meeting. Considering what he said and how he said it, he basically disturbed everything in a such a way that there was no way the meeting could procceed. The Sheikh stopped the meeting, so the pope had nothing to do but to withdraw. I was watching and this is basically the spirit of the situation.

A meeting like that where everybody is walking on eggs trying not to push wrong buttons can only runn smoothly when everyone is contributing. But when you get an intervention like that, I can’t imagine the organizer inviting the next speaker…it would sounds so out of line, considering that speeches are pri-written.

So the fact is the Pope did not walk out, the Sheikh disturbed the meeting and everybody walked out since there was nothing else to do. The Pope walking out first is not unusual, he always come out first and everybody else next out of respect…

I think Jews are advancing the the Pope walked out to pretend that the Pope acted on their side. But if catholic follow this lead, they will be transmitting a false message highliting the Pope instead of the real focus who is the Sheikh.

The media should give a honest analysis of situation, specially in situation like this one.

God bless

On the other side, I wonder what the Jordanian think of this considering how proud they must have been of their hospitality which they would surely hope it got recognized as ‘muslim’ hospitality. The Prince of Jordan must be super angry with the Sheikh.
