Anyone heard of "Light Weigh," a weight loss program for Catholics?

Since the Light Weigh website offers no clues as to their program, I can only assume it’s nearly identical to the Weigh Down program - which is basically “eat what you want as long as you are TRULY hungry and stop when you are TRULY full, relying on God for your emotional and spiritual needs instead of food”. That’s why you don’t see a “diet”- it’s using God and prayer to fill your emotional holes instead of food. I did the Weigh Down program when I was pregnant with my 3rd son. I only gained 20 lbs, whereas with the previous 2 it was 37 and 42 lbs - with exercise!!
So, if you get CDs, DVDs, a book and fellowship out of it, it can be very helpful and also assist you in learning to really listen to your body and what foods it’s craving- as opposed to what your MIND is craving.

I did the Light Weigh program at my parish several years ago and enjoyed the fellowship with the other participants. At each meeting we watched a short video and discussed it, then discussed our individual struggles with dieting.

The actual diet plan proposed is to simply eat less. It was suggested in one of the earlier videos that each meal should be no more food than one could place in a large coffee mug. Anything left over was to be saved for later.

The one good idea I took away from the program was to always ask for a takeout box at the beginning of a restaurant meal and to divide my meal in half as soon as it arrived at the table and place half of it in the box. That has worked well for me.

As for scientific methods of dieting, Light Weigh does not provide that and there are no instructions on decreasing the amount of carbs of sugar in one’s diet.

I lost 7 lbs over the course of the 12 weeks. Honestly, I joined the group because I was new to the parish and our parish doesn’t have much in the way of groups for older adults. I saw it as a way to meet people.

I’m 63, and have struggled with my weight since I was 18. I’ve tried a lot of eating programs, and the only thing that has worked for me is Weight Watchers. Some carbs (whole grain pasta, brown rice, whole wheat bread) are part of a healthy diet. Cutting carbs down too far results in powerful cravings and severe hunger, and no one can lose weight for long when they feel like they’re starving. Weight Watchers trains members to control eating in real-life situations, and offers group support. And, that weekly weigh-in is a good motivator. I strongly recommend it, especially if you can find a good meeting leader. I have not heard of Light Weigh, but an eating program needs to be a lifetime pursuit, rather than something you do for 8 weeks and then it’s over.
