Have any of you guys read the anti-Catholic book Secrets of Romanism (for research purposes, of course)? It’s by Joseph Zacchello, supposedly an “ex-priest.” I was just wondering because I noticed that my girlfriend was reading it :bigyikes: and want to be prepared for battle. Let me know if you know what I should expect to hear from her.
Thanks! 👍

I found it on Amazon for 4 dollars (used) I am going to buy it so I can get more familiar with it.

There are a couple of reviews there on it, and it seems to contain common attacks on the Catholic Church.

I don’t recommend buying it unless you are familiar with your faith and are not easily swayed by poison like this, all it does is focus on negative assertions and this sort of thing usually isn’t very good for your faith.

It looks very similar to A woman rides the beast, maybe I will post if this thread is still alive in a couple weeks.

It’s good that you’re getting it used so you’re not funding these people! I’m pretty solid with my faith and don’t think that any outside source would cause me to lose it. (Sadly, the actions of Church officials make me question my faith more than anything.) I just wanted to know what to expect so that I could ‘see it coming.’ If the thread is still alive, I’d really appreciate it if you got back to me after reading the book. If not, a private message would work. Thanks a lot! 👍

No problem, my wife approves of my addiction to books as there are a lot worse things to have as a hobby. I will PM you or post back in this thread if I get the chance.

I did that with someone else after their friend started telling them about A Woman Rides the Beast by Dave Hunt.

Why would anyone want to read such poison. Unless you are very ground in your faith and can counnter the arguments with little effort I would recommend not reading it.

Remember those bumper stickers that said “Question Authority”.

Good advice, I say. Sometimes when you do your research, you’ll find out that the authority is right! That is a good thing, no?

I really don’t like reading it at all. I have to though. My brother who I can credit for me coming back to the Catholic Church because of his distaste for it, has compelled me. I have seen these type books in his house and if I am going to be an example of love for him and talk to him I should understand what he has read.

I feel grounded in my faith sufficiently to read this stuff, and you get familiar with how they mis-represent the Catholic faith. I do need to take breaks, because once you see the mis-representation it kinda sickens you how they can be so blatant in their bias. I do need to take breaks from time to time, but I am building my library of (used) anti-catholic books. I have 4 right now and soon will have 5 with this one I am ordering. I think I will stop there and take a break from this sort of thing in a month or two.

You start to see patterns though and will see how many often quote from each other, such a Peter de Rosa or Dollinger and then have the nerve to call them devout Catholic historians.

All this stuff does wear you out and I will take the advice of someone on this forum and take a break from all the books and concentrate on Bible study until I am refreshed. I would really like to start a second Bible study for young adults in my Parish, we have one mostly consisting of older people.

Sorry I have read and heard of too many “Secrets of Romanism”. My euthsism has worn this on learning what those dasterdly “Papest” do. Luckly I’m Roman Catholic and don’t have to worry about them :rotfl: . I doubt they have anything that ittelictually stimulating but, if you have problems I am sure there are pleanty of people here to help unfold those naughty little secrets about confession, Mary, and the Pope.

Witch Hunt

Babylon Connection ?

Historian’s Fallacies: Toward a Logic of Historical Thought.
By David Hackett Fischer

You may find the above books of help in responding. Witch Hunt deals with the methods that are used against fellow protestants to prove that they are cultic. Babylon connection refutes the logic and misinformation techniques of books like Hysop’s two babylons. Historian’s Fallacies is excellent for learning to avoid pitfalls.

Thanks, I will have to look into that.

If you research most of the modern day “EX-priest” stories you will find they never were priests at all. Some really were but most are just making a living.

I’ve heard that too before, but do you know where I should research this guy to determine whether he was really a priest or not? His name is Joseph Zacchello. Thanks!

hello everyone!

Just to let you know this is the “enemy” girlfriend…lol, and i haven’t started reading it yet.

If you do a search on the Catholic Answers site you’ll find a couple of articles referencing him.

HAHA! 😃 You’re not my enemy and you know it.

Hey enemy, the secrets are out so they aren’t really secret. See the Catechism of the Catholic Church. And I think Karl Keating has a chapter in his Catholicism and Fundamentalism dealing with Zachello’s Secrets.

What you really want is a book written by Catholics, such as Catholic For A Reason (several authors), or Biblical Defense of Catholicism by Dave Armstrong. Many books also available from the Catholic Answers catalog. Books like Zachello’s Secrets, Boettner, Jack Chick, Dave Hunt, Maria Monk, or Rebecca Brown, etc and the rest are not very informative. But read it anyway and tell us what Zachello thinks is so secret.
