I have an old Agnus Dei blessed by Pope Pius XII which I am really fond of…anyone else have any of these older, more traditional sacramentals?

Do you mean older sacramentals as in the age of the actually sacramental, or traditional sacramental like perhaps a scapular?

I know zillions (ok, a lot) of people who wear scapulars. Can you give us a run-down of what type of sacrementals you are talking about? I also know many people who keep holy water (and holy salt) in their homes, have enthroned a picture of the Sacred Heart, have blessed statues and use blessed candles. In this area we don’t consider those things rare or old-fashioned–I’m sure in other places that isn’t the case.

I would love to have an Agnus Dei. They’re hard to come by anymore…
I’ve been teased as being the queen of sacramentals before. I really like them, though, and I think they can help to bring you closer to God.

Do they even make those anymore? I mean doesnt the Pope himself have to bless those? I read about them once.

I wear a Brown Scapular (with St. Michael depicted on it) and a St. Benedict medal. I also wear a St. Brendan (my patron) medal and a medal with St. Michael on one side and a guardian angel on the other side. I suppose these are necessarily sacramentals though, since I haven’t yet been invested in the Scapular or had any of my medals blessed.

I wear a Brown Scapular and a Miraculous medal. The two often get entwined, I have no idea how, but I must toss and turn a lot in my sleep:shrug:.

I could be wrong, but I do not believe they are made anymore…I think, and I could be wrong again, that either John XXIII or Paul VI was the last pope to do it…the wax inside the Agnus Dei, which is the wax from the paschal candle which signifies the “virgin” flesh of Christ.
In a wonderful article by Charles Hugo Doyle, entitled “The Forgotten Sacramental,” the author provides a summary of the special virtues of the Agnus Dei, as cited by Popes Urban V, Paul II, Julius III, Sixtus V and Benedict XIV, which include the following benefits:
They foster piety, banish tepidity, preserve from vice and dispose to virtue.
They cancel venial sins and purify from the stain left by grievous sin after it has been remitted in the Sacrament of Penance.
They banish evil spirits, deliver from temptation and preserve from eternal ruin.
They are a protection from a sudden and unprovided death.
They dispel fears occasioned by evil spirits. They are a protection in combat, and have power to ensure victory.
They deliver from poison and from the snares of the wicked.
They are excellent preventatives against sickness and are also an efficacious remedy – especially in cases of epilepsy. They hinder the ravages of pestilence, of epidemics and infectious diseases.
They quiet the winds, dissipate hurricanes, calm whirlwinds, and keep away tempests.
They save from shipwreck and the danger of lightning and floods. An anecdote is recalled here of Pope St. Pius V, who had recourse to this expedient when the Tiber was in flood and seemed likely to submerge the city. We are told that when an Agnus Dei had been thrown into the river, the angry waters at once subsided.

As for Sacramentals - We have a home altar with a relic of St Maria Goretti - an Enthronment of the Sacred Heart - Blessed Candles from Candlemas - Holy Water Fonts by the doors - We wear the brown scapular and I wear a miraculous medal. In addition we have a 6 foot Our Lady of Guadalupe my mother in law gave us that she had stored in a closet when she moved in with my wifes sister and my son brought us a Portrait of the Our Mother of Perpetual Help from Rome last May. And we keep the Blessed Palms from every Palm Sunday. We Catholics do love our Sacramentals.

Mal: That is so funny - Its a morning ritual with me too. Every morning I have to seperate the two. And my Scapular always rides down my shoulder so I am forever unbuttoning my shirt and putting it back in place. LOL

I wear the brown scapular… and i make Rosaries 
i have several statues, and yes, even a relic or two…
but my relics are not “old sacramentals” in that sense. lol…
St John Neumann and St Katherine Drexel are “young” saints still…
i had not heard of the Agnus Dei medallion, i will look it up, maybe one of my friends has one from their mom or grandmom…

I told my wife that some morning she is going to find me stone cold dead beside her because I was strangled by my Pius X “Pardon” crucifix, brown scapular, and my large very old Pectoral Crucifix(4 1/2 " long).
If that happens, so be it. I’m not going to sleep without them.

I wear the Brown Scapular but will be replacing it with a medal because of safety concerns at work. (The cloth can carry pathogens and occasionally dangle when I am providing care and a medal is easier to keep clean and in place.) I use a traditional five-decade Rosary and have a statue of Mary, an icon of Jesus, a votive candle, some prayer cards and an old St Joseph’s Daily Missal (1959) in my prayer corner. I use them when I pray my Rosary at home but I often pray it while commuting. I have a blessed crucifix over my door, which is the traditional place we always had one as long as I can remember. The sisters told us always to have one over the entrance to the house so that Jesus would watch our comings and goings. 
I don’t have a holy-water font on the wall and I want to get one so that I can bless myself with holy water before working on my art projects. Lately I am becoming very sensitive to that sort of thing with any religious-themed art that I do. (Right now I am working on my Lenten crucifixes.)
BTW, what is the protocol that you use to get Holy Water for the home?

I also have two Infant of Prague statues from the 50s, a holy water font, crucifix over my bed, two replica icons, and a traditional, 15-decade Rosary.

I had to follow up on the Agnus Dei. After reading this here on Friday - I mentioned it to my Son who told me that the Bishop of Our Church has a few Agnus Dei’s Since my wife and I had a meeting with him after Mass yesterday on another matter - at its conclusion I mentioned it to him and he went into the rectory and brought out two of them. He said one was Blessed by Pope Pius the XII and the smaller one was blessed by Pope Leo the XIII. I actually held them in my hand yesterday. He told me that there is another one they keep at the convent and that last spring a Tornado destroyed their barn - a tree - their Chicken house and a large windmill on both sides of the convent but it didnt touch the convent itself. Thanks to Michael for making me aware of this awesome sacramental. Until Friday I was unaware of their existance , believe it or not.
