They can, but if that person suspected they were discriminated against all they would have to do is file a complaint with the Fair Housing Bureau. Within a few weeks the government would be going over all of the landlords records of what was available, when, and who tried to rent it.It happened to us too when I was a kid. I was always told it was because kids break things, and make a lot of noise. And they do…so it’s kind of understandible. Still, it’s kind of stupid for someone to tell a potential tenant that they won’t rent to them because they have kids. They can just call them back and tell them that they committed to another party. End of story.
It became illegal in 1988 to discriminate based on kids. I personally think that that’s the only thing you should be able to discriminate for. Kids are by their very nature noisy and destructive. And unlike the other protected classes having kids is a choice. If you can keep out pets why not kids?
But my opinion doesn’t matter, the law is what it is and anyone caught breaking it should receive the harshest penalties available.
