Apartments that won't rent to anyone with children

It happened to us too when I was a kid. I was always told it was because kids break things, and make a lot of noise. And they do…so it’s kind of understandible. Still, it’s kind of stupid for someone to tell a potential tenant that they won’t rent to them because they have kids. They can just call them back and tell them that they committed to another party. End of story.
They can, but if that person suspected they were discriminated against all they would have to do is file a complaint with the Fair Housing Bureau. Within a few weeks the government would be going over all of the landlords records of what was available, when, and who tried to rent it.

It became illegal in 1988 to discriminate based on kids. I personally think that that’s the only thing you should be able to discriminate for. Kids are by their very nature noisy and destructive. And unlike the other protected classes having kids is a choice. If you can keep out pets why not kids?

But my opinion doesn’t matter, the law is what it is and anyone caught breaking it should receive the harshest penalties available.

Gays are a protected group and cannot be discriminated against because of their sexual orientation. I don’t think that families with children are part of a protected group.

Sooo… Gays cannot be refused, but families with children can be refused - Except in localities where legislation is enacted that provides protection.
I think if you have homosexuals in the building, then you probably don’t want to mix children in there with them - that could get nasty.

But there is no reason for a larger landlord not to designate one building for homosexuals and single adults, and another for married heterosexual couples and families.

“Gay” activists would probably sue for discrimination.

That’s called steering and it is also illegal.

Sexual orientation is not a protected class in federal law, and all? or most? state laws, but some cities have passed local ordinances to make it a protected class–including San Francisco. It would be a local violation, not a federal one.

That might be difficult if the landlord had multiple applicants. It really is up to him/her to choose who can rent there.

There is a reason that landlords are supposed to keep written record of who calls and visits when. If the policy is that a unit is held with a deposit, than whoever gets the deposit in first gets the apartment. If its held with an application, then whoever gets that in first gets it. If records are not kept well it is far more likely that a judge will rule in favor of the complainant. The way the laws are written the landlord gets no say who lives there as long as they meet income, credit, and background standards, that of course have to be applied consistently.

I’ve done this for quite awhile, and trust me, the loopholes have been closed.

I once had a fair housing complaint against me. Two black men wanted a two bedroom. I didn’t have one available. They thought I was lying so they tested me by sending in their white friend. I did offer to lease to her, but she wanted a one bedroom and I did have that. So the guys filed a complaint and I spent weeks being interviewed and investigated. In the end it was that I had solid records of my availability, of what the prospects wanted, and who else I had to say no to based on two bedroom availability that saved me from being sued for tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars. But the experience was scary and humiliating. Fair Housing is nothing to fool around with or bend the rules on.

I think they are a lot more likely to get away with denying an apartment to a poor family with children than to a “gay” couple since poor families with children don’t have the money and a powerful lobby that aggressively acts on their behalf at the slightest hint of discrimination the way “gay” activists do.

It is free to file a complaint with the Fair Housing Bureau. Anyone can do it. They investigate, and if they find that you were in fact discriminated against it is very cheap and easy to pursue that in court because of how much attorneys stand to gain from those cases.

No “powerful lobbies” or activist groups required.

I really, really wish that more people knew their rights when it comes to housing. Too many people get hurt because they don’t

“Steering?”

So, we should house little children in the same buildings as homosexuals?

I think in 20 years you’ll have lawsuits coming at you so fast you won’t be able to breathe, from all those kids who got molested in your building, because you knowingly housed them with homosexuals.

Steering - to castrate calves before sexual maturity to be raised for beef.
I think this is what they must be talking about.

Actually, any place liberal enough, enough to have homosexuals to be directed to a “separate building”, would likely be so liberal that any suite about kids living too close to homosexuals would be thrown out as a bigoted complaint. You’d be lucky not to be condemned as such in open court.

Are homosexuals known to be child molesters?
I didn’t know that.
Good information. Thanks. 👍

What do you think the whole priest scandal was all about? This is why homosexual men are no longer welcome in the priesthood.
