This thread was inspired by a story by po18guy in the Sacred Scripture portion wherein he had a “gotcha” moment against a Mormon trying to evangelize him.
His story was how he replied to the Mormon’s question as to why Catholics don’t have Apostles in the organization anymore and he countered by showing the verse in Acts that Apostles are those who have personally witnessed Christ’s ministry, and he was able to show it via the Mormon’s own Bible! This set the Mormon to shaking and almost frothing at the mouth at having been shown up by a Catholic and by his own Bible no less.
My story is about an online discussion with a “born again” sola scripturist, blasting us for having a Pope when it clearly wasn’t in the Bible. I asked him if he believed in the Trinity and if so, why? The word wasn’t even in the Bible. He tried to counter with the Great Commission and I said “that’s a lot of words. I don’t see the word Trinity there either”. He finally brought out Webster to refer to as a definition and I replied “if you’re allowed to refer to Webster as an Authority other than the Bible, why can’t we Catholics have Sacred Tradition as another Authority complementary with the Bible? Why do you hold us Catholics to a standard you yourself aren’t willing to adhere to?”
Please share your “gotcha!” apologetic moments.
