Being charitable towards another’s helpful explanation, if given in the spirit of truth, should be welcomed. If clarification is required it may be given as a kindly inquiry.
If one does not care for the explanation, offer another and move on. Right? :harp:

Those of us old enough to remember will recall mothers and grandmothers reciting the Rosary during Mass to try and participate in some way.

Good grief - wasn’t this old reinforcement for an ignorant argument finally killed off?
Those of us old enough to remember would have no reason or ability to question why a person was reciting the Holy Rosary during Mass. Had they been given lobotomies and rendered unable to participate in the Mass because they had a rosary in hand and their lips silently moved? Those who feel the need to “know” if a person is participating in the Mass, and guessing about those they think are not, have a severe nose problem.
The rosary is a sacramental and is a wonderful method of prayer. One can say the rosary while assisting at the Mass (if you have learned how to do so) .❤️

I guess you could say the same about someone texting at Mass, couldn’t you. Has he been given a lobotomy? Has he been rendered unable to participate in the Mass because he has a cell phone in his hand and his fingers silently moved?

One can text while assisting at the Mass (if you have learned you to do so).

Maybe they are texting prayers of the Mass? Otherwise, why would you try to compare apples and oranges? I suggest staying focused on one’s own talk with Our Lord is of more importance. I believe more Grandmothers and Mothers have offered the best example of practicing prayer and should not be made examples as ignorant participants at the Holy Mass. Right? 😉

What do you mean there is no evidence that modern reforms fixed any of them? Astonishing! Do not the people participate more fully? Do they not hear more of the Word of God in the readings? Do they not take Communion more frequently?

Jesus said, ‘DO this in memory of me’. It was a call to action. A call to participation. He didn’t say, ‘Watch a presbyterate do this in memory of me’. He called all his people to
DO this…
The standard reply to this is that lay participation at Mass does not mean external actions; it means interior participation. Praying long and being attentive.

The reforms have given the laity the idea that the Mass is a performance directed at them
and in which their outer participation should be maximised. It leads to showbiz in the sanctuary.

This obscures the fact the Mass is a mystical rite, a commemorative sacrifice directed, in supplication, to God.

I think it’s got this way because of a crisis of confidence in the Church and a turning away from its mystical roots; we started to ape the Protestants and to try to get back to a (modern) idea of what the early Church was like, assuming it was better, somehow.
