Nationalist politicians have criticised a DUP assembly member who is opposing a possible visit to Northern Ireland by the Pope.
Ian McCrea said most people in NI belong to denominations that hold the Pope to be “the Antichrist”.
He said many Catholics would oppose the visit over clerical abuse scandals and Protestant opposition could be “detrimental to community relations”.
Sinn Féin’s Daithí McKay said the DUP should apologise for comments.

Well, IMO (which I know no one’s asking for, but too bad :p) if John Paul II can welcome Billy Graham to Poland and let him preach in a Catholic Church, then Benedict XVI can go to N. Ireland if he wants to! These people need to get over themselves! Last I checked, Benedict’s a grown man and can go to any “free” country he wants! No Pope’s been to the Britsh Isles since the Reformation?? That’s just tragic! That proves the Pope NEEDS to go there!

In Christ,

Ellen

Er…John Paul II visited Ireland in 1979 and England in1982. I think that counts as being to the British Isles.

I wouldn’t be too quick to ignore the opposition here. I’m not quick to embrace their idea either. But it does deserve the attention of the Vatican Secretary of State. If he does visit Northern Ireland, the Secretary of State will have to do some fancy diplomatic talking prior to the visit. It is their country and they do have the right to deny any foreigner an entry visa.

The Pope doesn’t need a visa to enter any country of the European Union.
Maybe I’m misinformed here. I thought that the UK is not part of the European Union. Am I wrong? Also, the Vatican is not part of the European Union. The pope is a citizen of Vatican City State. He is no longer a German citizen. Popes must give up their national citizenship. It retains its autonomy from the EU. Northern Ireland is part of the UK.

The UK **is **one of the 27 states of the European Union but does not use the European currency.

The Vatican is not a member of the EU and under the 1930 Concordat is exempt from EU duties and customs. Its citizens may travel anywhere within the EU without a visa. You will note that there are no immigration posts on the Vatican’s borders with the rest of the city of Rome. Also, under the terms of a monetary agreement with the EU, the Vatican uses the European currency.

As for NI being part of the UK [without getting into the politics of that statement 🙂 ] the correct title for the UK is the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. So, Northern Ireland IS part of the European Union.

McCrea is talking nonsense. His statement has been ridiculed by people from across the political spectrum and he speaks solely for himself. Northern Ireland IS part of the EU and the Pope has been specifically invited by the Secretary of State, Shaun Woodward, to visit. Northern Ireland has absolutely no right to debar anyone from entering the country, that is the prerogative of the Home Office.

Thanks, I didn’t know this about the UK. I knew about the concordat between Italy and the Vatican.

The Pope, ie JP2 apologised for the death of Hus, I wish they would go further.

Anti-Christ means replaces and is in the stead of Jesus. By trying to be a mediator the popes may have done this, but will the foretold anti-Christ be the Pope?

It is best for norther Irish pastors to discern at the time, I mean surely then they will hear his intent.

Anti-Christ doesn’t mean that at all.
John uses it biblically in reference to people who preach against the message of Christ.

Yes, it does. The prefix anti- means “against, opposite, instead of”. An anti-Christ can be one who is against or who opposes the Christ. He can also be one who seeks to take the place of Christ by having people worship him (which necessarily includes the prior notions of being against or opposite). All three meanings are found in Scripture.

And, no, Logan5, the Anti-Christ will not be a pope.

Approximately 40-45% of N.Ireland is Catholic/Nationalist. There is no reason whatsoever that the Pope should not visit.

Yes there will be opposition from fundamentalist Protestants - but that should not stop a papal visit.

I, for one, from N.Ireland, will be there to welcome him if he comes.👍
