An American terrorism commentator has apologised for describing Birmingham as a “Muslim-only city” where non-Muslims “don’t go” during a Fox News interview.
Steven Emerson told the channel that in London “Muslim religious police” beat “anyone who doesn’t dress according to Muslim, religious Muslim attire”.
He later issued an apology for his “terrible error”.
His comments have come in for ridicule, with the hashtag #FoxNewsFacts trending on Twitter.
He says he was relying on sources he usually finds reliable, but even the most basic of checks would have shown how ludicrous this was: I wonder what his sources were? Hopefully not just people on forums or blogs. I guess it’s easy to imagine that just about anything might happen far enough away; like the ridiculous stories we often get in the tabloids about things Americans supposedly do.

A lot of the reaction and comments are very funny, but there are some interesting suggestions, including the petition for him to apologise to Birmingham online for a Fox News audience, because otherwise people who saw the original interview will continue to believe it.

Canadian Mark Steyn, fairly well known journalist/pundit in North America went to University in Birmingham. Even I knew what Emerson, what an English name by the way, was wrong immediately.

Nigel Farage begs to differ.
Just days after an American terrorism expert was widely ridiculed for calling Birmingham a “Muslim only city”, UK Independence Party leader Nigel Farage has told Fox News that there are indeed areas of the UK that have been transformed into ‘Muslim ghettos’, where non-Muslims are excluded.[breitbart.com/national-security/2015/01/14/farage-muslim-ghettoes-in-europe-are-sharia-run-no-go-zones-for-police/](http://www.breitbart.com/national-security/2015/01/14/farage-muslim-ghettoes-in-europe-are-sharia-run-no-go-zones-for-police/)

WHen I first saw this story, I assumed they were talking about Alabama and I was really confused.

I wonder if it is safe for young girls yet, or if they are still being sacrificed to Asian sex rings, on that altar of political correctness?

One story blends into another though, with no remembrance or follow-up, and the the little waifs of the English street get eclipsed by the kidnapped girls of Boko Nigeria.

Instead of creating inflammatory stories on a slow news day, it would be nice to press on the stories that have already made the news, like they were Watergate or OJ Simpson maybe, or even that airplane going down out of Malaysia.

Lol at using Nigel Farage as a source. I hope that wasn’t who Emerson was using!

And the claim was that the entire city of Birmingham was a no-go area for non-Muslims.

That’s right: all news stories about Britain are really all about the same thing, just like all news stories about the Catholic Church are really about the same thing. Or maybe some news stories are irrelevant to this, rather lighthearted, story, which is mostly notable because of the amusing response. You would have little patience for someone who commented on a story about nuns putting on a play, for instance, with references to the paedophile priests.

Did you see that Emerson, in his apology, called Birmingham a beautiful city? The people of Birmingham responded especially amusingly to that.
