Thanks to everyone who has contributed. The priest of this parish, who is the only one serving, has an ego and is very stubborn. He drove a lot of our big contributors and long-time members away with changes he made right after he arrived, and things haven’t improved since then. A lot of our ministries disappeared when the people serving in them defected to the other nearby parish.
- His homilies are regularly so long that the Mass is 90 minutes long, and he does it on purpose. He made that clear to us by repeating over and over in his homilies how he thinks Catholics do not give enough time to God during the course of their week. Of course he doesn’t take into consideration the families with children, or the fact that many of us spend a lot more time in prayer even when we aren’t in Mass.
- Thus, the regular Mass times had to be shifted around to accommodate his schedule since one Mass would not have left the church when the next Mass arrived to a full parking lot.
- He started allowing quincineras during the English speaking Masses, which became a huge distraction, with all the girls in their fancy dresses and the boys in tuxes and popping their gum. Now, don’t get me wrong, I think the ceremony is a wonderful thing for young ladies of the Mexican culture, but it didn’t need to be held within a Mass. That no longer takes place but the damage was done and the people who left have not returned.
- As far as his homilies go…He is a brilliant man, there’s no doubt. Some of his homilies are great, some are too repetitive, and all of them could be edited. He tends to ramble around, especially at the vigil Mass which is the one we usually attend. You don’t need to repeat and repeat the same idea 15 times in slightly different ways, especially if you’ve already droned on for 35 minutes!
I really think, on some level, that he believes it’s kind of his show. He’s not traditional in any way, we don’t have a lot of the orthodox elements such as the bells, and of course we do the hand-holding and orans posture which I have also come to dislike greatly.
He shared with us once that early in his priestly career, he got a notice that someone was in the process of dying and he tried to get there to give them Last Rites, but didn’t make it in time. He actually had to get counseling to recover, which to me suggests that he believes HE is more important than the Holy Spirit. I mean, it’s not as if the person is going to hell because Father got stuck in traffic and their soul left their body…but I could see that he was totally sincere in that he really believed himself to be responsible…I felt sorry for his younger self but I still think he has a lot of ego tied up in his job.
I guess I can be happy no one gives him a standing ovation…

I know that audiences these days seem to ALWAYS stand up, no matter how flawed a presentation might have been…I guess it’s the “participation trophy” that is awarded just for trying…
And to the poster who said it’s kind of an automatic response for some people and then others join in…That’s true. The applause always starts on the other side of the church so I suspect he has a few “fans” over there, I have never found them or I’d glare at them. As it is, I simply put my head down and say a quick prayer.
