At the church I attended growing up (and got married in), my parents are in the choir and have been for about 20 years. (I’m a cradle Catholic.) Some years ago, people started clapping after Mass. I can understand why some people don’t like this, but in my eyes, it’s always been a kindness. If the hymns sang by the choir touched someone during Mass, helped bring them closer to Jesus during Mass, that’s a good thing. I think recognizing the time put in to finding the right songs to match up with the scripture readings and practicing them for hours is kind. Does the choir need applause? No. Is it nice to recognize their devotion to Jesus as witnessed through song? Sure. I don’t think recognizing peoples’ God-given gifts is a problem.
Others give of their time too of course – lectors, Eucharistic ministers, ushers, everyone – but breaking into applause during Mass to recognize them wouldn’t be appropriate. However, after Mass, as I mentioned, is different.
Come to think of it, our priest often makes mention of all the people who serve at Mass (in their various capacities) and thanks them for serving, which sometimes leads to applause (this usually happens after Communion before the final blessing). He’s been a priest for about 35 or 40 years if I’m remembering correctly, and he’s pretty traditional.
Please don’t attack me for not being “traditional” enough. Jesus is the reason my parents are in that choir, not because of some clapping once a week. They’d do it with or without the applause, as would most choir members I’m sure. :yup:
