For centuries, nuns wore habits in heat and cold, and they survived. Why is it that all of a sudden they can’t do that anymore? Plus, It’s a good opportunity to offer it up! After all, we do have to die to ourselves.

And it’s a lot hotter in hell.

Because many orders decided that their habits, which were simply the everyday plain clothing of medieval times, could be updated to the everyday plain clothing of today.

True. I was just pointing out that there is nothing immodest about knees.

We actually now live in many places that were unliveable before. Yes, there were missions here and there but much of the south-west was uninhabitable until air conditioner.

There are still MANY US orders that wear habits.

And, just an FYI, habits originated from typical “poor” clothing at the time. They were never meant to be expensive garb that is unique…that was left for veils. (what goes over the head). Habits are prohibitivly expensive. I know sisters and those who don’t make their own habits often nearly wear through them because they are so pricey…some even must do laundry in pj’s because they only have one!!!

So then why are there still religious orders who wear habits?

I don’t think there’s an excuse. As nuns, the last thing they should be doing is keeping up with the times.

Sempr, you made my day. Read Vat. 11 doc. about wearing habits. I am not for or against the habit. The habit has simply evolved from the styles of the day or era in which orders were founded. Skin and bone don’t count for much and the cloth will war away. It is the heart and soul and intent that to Love the Lord the best we can that is the foundation of all orders. Peace.

The nuns I know who wear pantsuits get them at a thrift shop and are very holy people.

Because it’s their choice. Some orders chose to keep traditional habits; others have changed them.
The only people who have a valid opinion on the choice are members of the order.

I’m not saying that they aren’t holy, I’m just saying that I don’t believe they’re correct in wearing pant suits.

Right, but nuns are called in a special way to manifest their consecration EXTERNALLY, so it does matter what they wear.

Pant suits don’t exactly give off the vibe of poverty to me.

Each order has prayerfully discerned their attire. I know since I am a laywoman I was not given a vote. I do not deserve one.

That’s your impression. They can be purchased cheaply at Kohls. They are light years closer to the heart of the purpose of a habit than what we call habits today.

Again, I’m not a huge fan of the lack of veiling but no habit? I think that it’s often rather prudent.

I bet habits cost more than the five dollars our sisters pay for pantsuits.

I know one sister who wears a slightly-above-the-knee habit that’s pretty simple as far as clothesmaking goes…I was sitting with her when her niece offered to buy her a new one…it was $250 and that was 10 years ago. Partly the cost of handmaking but mostly for the material.
