Is the process for getting a new composition approved for liturgical use similiar or the same as that for getting an Imprimatur on a theological book?

I only wish it were. All that is needed is for a music publishing company to accept it, and editorial standards vary greatly from one publisher to another.

I think that the comoposer’s local Ordinary should examine the piece, especially the lyircs, to ensure that they conform to the teachings of the Church. Leaving it to the publishing house is not something I would recomment, considering OCP’s (and GIA, to a certain extent) track record with songs.

Musicam Sacram might provide some insight. Here is the link to the documents:

I hope this helps.

Yes, this should be done, but it doesn’t appear to happen very often.

Thank you for that!

See, I’m ordinarily an orchestral composer (e.g., the music on my page at soundclick soundclick.com/bands/default.cfm?bandID=815964)). I’ve recently been reading up on the theory behind Gregorian Chant and Sacred Polyphony, and have completed a few original compositions in each genre. No one at my parish knew anything about how I would go about submitting them to the Church’s judgment, not even my priest. Apparently there is no such process. 😦 I suppose I could send the sheet music to the office of the Bishop with a note explaining what I’m requesting… 🤷
